Chapter 6 - The Shadows Outside the Gates

While peace slowly settled over the upper floors of the Blackwood mansion, the outside world was waking up to a media firestorm.

By 10:00 AM, headlines flashed across every major news network in Chicago: “BLACKWOOD ENGAGEMENT OFF: High-Society Wedding Canceled Amid Sudden Federal Investigation!” “MILLIONS MISSING: Blackwood Foundation Audited Following Shocking Estate Raid!”

Helicopters buzzed overhead like angry hornets, hovering just outside the restricted airspace boundary of the Blackwood estate. Down on the snowy street corner, reporters thrust microphones toward security cameras, demanding answers about rumors of an injured child and a late-night police presence.

Inside the estate’s secure command center on the ground floor, Marco Ruiz stood in front of a wall of high-definition monitors, reviewing the perimeter feeds.

"Boss," Marco spoke into his comm-link, connecting directly to Victor’s private study. "We have a problem at the west gate. A reporter from the Chicago Tribune managed to bribe one of the local delivery drivers to sneak past the outer checkpoint. He’s currently holding up a tablet with photos of Serena being led out in handcuffs by federal marshals, and he’s shouting that he has documents proving the Blackwood estate covered up a domestic assault."

On the other end of the line, Victor’s voice was ice-cold. "Detain him. Confiscate the tablet. And draft a formal press release detailing the exact charges against Serena Montigue—including child endangerment and financial fraud. Let the public see the truth before the tabloids turn it into a circus."

"Already drafting it," Marco replied. "By the way... how is the boy?"

"Sleeping," Victor said. "And Lily is with him."

Marco allowed himself the ghost of a smile. "She's good for him, boss. For both of you."

Victor didn't answer immediately. He clicked off the comm-link and stood by the floor-to-ceiling window of his private study, looking out across the manicured gardens where the snow was beginning to melt under the midday sun.

For thirteen years, since the death of his first wife, Victor Blackwood had built an emotional fortress around himself. He believed that feeling was a weakness, that love was a liability, and that the only way to survive the ruthless corporate jungle was through absolute, unyielding control.

Yet, watching Lily cradle his injured son through the dark hours of the night had shattered something fundamental inside him.

He didn't want a fortress anymore.

He wanted a home.
