Chapter 2 - The Clinical Record

The emergency room at Jackson Memorial Hospital was a blur of fluorescent lights and hushed medical chatter. Skylar sat on the edge of the examination table, a cold, sterile compress pressed gently against her left cheek. Her skin was a patchwork of angry, blistered red and pale, raw patches where the boiling liquid had stripped the top layer of dermis.

Dr. Arispe, a compassionate but highly focused attending physician, carefully removed the compress to inspect the damage. She shook her head, her expression hardening as she analyzed the pattern of the burn.
"This is a deep partial-thickness burn, Skylar," Dr. Arispe said softly. "The liquid was near boiling point, and the distribution is highly concentrated on the left facial plane and anterior neck. This wasn't a spill from a dropped mug. The angle of impact suggests a direct, high-velocity throw."
"I... I tripped," Skylar whispered, the old, familiar voice of shame and self-preservation trying to protect the monster who had hurt her.
Dr. Arispe placed a gentle hand on Skylar's uninjured shoulder, looking directly into her eyes. "Skylar, please. I see these injuries every week. A spill pattern goes downward, hitting the chest and lap first. This hit your face directly at eye level. If you don't tell me the truth, I cannot document this properly. And you need this documented."
The weight of three years of silence, three years of defending Derek's "strong personality" and Suzanne's endless greed, finally crumbled. A single tear rolled down Skylar's unburned right cheek.
"My husband," she whispered, her voice cracking. "He threw his coffee at me because I wouldn't give his sister my bank card."
"Thank you for telling me," Dr. Arispe said, immediately pulling out a specialized medical camera. "We are going to photograph these injuries. We are going to write a comprehensive forensic medical report, and I am bringing in our on-duty social worker and the domestic violence liaison."

Within an hour, two Miami-Dade police officers arrived at her bedside. Skylar’s hand shook so violently she could barely hold the pen, but she signed the official police report, detailing every word of Derek's threat and the violent attack that followed. For the first time in her life, she wasn't balancing a ledger to keep the peace. She was balancing it to get even.
