Chapter 2 - The Shadow in the Study
The recovery was a blur of surgeries and morphine, but my mind was clearer than it had ever been. While my mother, Brenda, was busy spinning a narrative on social media about my "tragic accidental fall during a domestic dispute," Arthur Sterling was busy dismantling their life.
"Your father," Arthur explained, visiting me daily, "is not a millionaire. He is a fraud. He has been living off the interest of your late grandfather’s estate. But that estate was ironclad. It required a specific signature upon your twenty-fifth birthday to continue the payments to the Davis household. If you were incapacitated—or dead—your father planned to claim the estate under a 'survivorship' clause he forged years ago."
I felt a cold shiver that had nothing to do with the hospital’s air conditioning. "He tried to kill me for an inheritance?"
"He tried to eliminate the obstacle," Arthur replied.
The "six witnesses" were not just random observers. They were the key. Marcus, the electrician, wasn't just a passerby; he was a retired police detective who had been investigating the suspicious "accidents" that had plagued our family for years. The neighbors were people my parents had bullied for decades, all waiting for a moment to strike back.
Wyatt was by my side through it all, funding the private investigators who were tearing apart my parents' financial records. We found the digital trail: thousands of dollars diverted from my college fund, my childhood savings, and the trust itself, all funneled into Melanie’s designer wardrobe and my father’s gambling debts.
"They aren't just going to jail for the assault," Wyatt said one evening, holding my hand, his eyes burning with resolve. "They're going to lose everything. The house, the lifestyle, the reputation. I’ve bought the mortgage on their property. As of this morning, I am their landlord."
