Chapter 5 - A New Foundation

The house was quiet again.

The scent of rosemary chicken still lingered in the air, mixed with the sharp, acidic tang of spilled Cabernet on the hardwood floor. Lena walked into the room, bringing a cold washcloth wrapped in ice, gently pressing it against my jaw where the makeup had been wiped away.

"It's over, Mara," Lena whispered, tears shining in her eyes. "They’re gone. They’re both going to jail."

I took the ice pack from her, looking around the room. The broken sideboard, the overturned centerpiece, the stained floor. It looked like a war zone, but for the first time in four years, I felt like I could breathe. The air felt lighter. The walls felt wider.

Priya closed her laptop and packed it into her briefcase. "The police have the audio file, the video from last night, and the financial records. The DA is already fast-tracking the protective order. Daniel won't be able to come within five hundred feet of you or this property ever again. We file for divorce first thing tomorrow morning."

"Thank you, Priya," I said, shaking her hand.

"You were incredibly brave, Mara," Priya said softly. "But please, take care of yourself now. The legal battle will be intense, but the physical danger is passed."

After Lena, Marcus, and Priya left to follow the police to the precinct, I stood alone in my kitchen. I walked over to the window where my small pots of herbs grew in the sunlight. I reached down and touched the green leaves of the rosemary plant.

I had built this life before Daniel, and I would rebuild it after him.

I walked back into the bathroom, picked up the pale pink makeup bag with the tiny gold flowers, and walked out to the kitchen trash can. I tossed it inside, letting the lid slam shut with a definitive, final click.

No more hiding. No more concealing.

I walked to the front door, looked out at the empty, quiet street, and locked it. Not out of fear, but because this house was entirely mine again.
