Chapter 5 - The Long Shadow

The graduation ceremony continued, but it was hollow. The pomp and circumstance, the speeches about honor and sacrifice—it all felt like a pantomime to Olivia, who stood by the side of the parade field, surrounded by shadows.

She watched as Caleb walked across the stage, his head held high. He looked like the man she had dreamed of him becoming, and for a moment, the weight of the last twenty years felt worth the price. When he saw her standing in the shade of the tall oaks, his eyes met hers. There was no fear in his expression, only a profound, dawning understanding.
He knew she was leaving. He knew that the life they had shared was over.
As the ceremony ended and the families began to disperse, Olivia turned to follow General Vance toward the waiting black car.
"Wait," a voice called out.
She stopped. Caleb was running toward her, his cap off, his hair windswept in the Georgia heat. He stopped in front of her, the newly commissioned officer face-to-face with the woman who had once commanded the night.
"I don't know what you were," Caleb said, looking at the tattoo on her arm. "And I don't care about the secrets. But I know who you are."
He reached out and pulled her into a hug—a firm, soldierly embrace that held the weight of a goodbye.
"Come back, Mom," he whispered.
"I will," she promised.
She climbed into the back of the car, sitting beside the General. As the car pulled away, leaving Fort Mason behind, she looked at the reflection of the base in the window. She realized that she hadn't just been hiding from her past; she had been preparing for it.

The tattoo on her arm seemed to burn, a reminder of the blade and the wing. The Raven would fly again, but this time, it wouldn't be in the shadows. This time, she would be the one to decide where the storm landed.
The civilian life was over. The legacy of Unit Raven was back in play, and Olivia Carter—or whoever she needed to be—was finally ready to finish the mission.
