Chapter 4 - The Breaking of the Script

The heavy wooden door of the examination room shuddered violently as a fire axe splintered the frame. Within seconds, the lock gave way, and three uniform officers, led by a stern-faced female detective, burst into the room with weapons drawn.

"Step away from the beds! Hands where I can see them!" Detective Ramirez shouted, her eyes instantly taking in the horrific state of the two girls.

Arthur immediately raised his hands, his face contorting into an expression of profound relief and vulnerability. "Thank God you're here, Officer. This doctor... he locked us in. My daughters are severely injured, they need specialized neurological care, and he's holding us hostage!"

Dr. Hayes stepped into the room behind the officers, holding a tablet. "Detective, look at the telemetry and the physical trauma markers. This man is a master manipulator. The mother is completely institutionalized by abuse."

"He's lying!" Chloe screamed from her bed, tears streaming down her face as she pointed a shaking finger at Arthur. "He does it every night! He makes our mother turn up the TV so the neighbors can't hear us! He has a belt in his car right now with our blood on it!"

"Detective, please," Arthur said, taking a step toward Ramirez, his voice dripping with condescension. "My stepdaughter is suffering from severe psychiatric delusions. She has a history of self-harm. We have the medical records to prove it."

"He does have the records," Maya interrupted, her voice cutting through the chaos like a scalpel. She sat up, ignoring the agonizing throbbing in her temples. "Because he paid Dr. Sterling at the Westside Clinic fifty thousand dollars out of my father’s stolen corporate account to falsify those psychiatric reports."

Arthur’s face drained of color. "You little—"

"Detective Ramirez," Maya continued, staring directly at the detective. "Search the cloud database for the Finch Estate Trust, server ID 8842. Under the folder 'Project Epilogue,' you will find eighty-two distinct audio recordings spanning the last fourteen months. The most recent recording was uploaded exactly forty-two minutes ago from our living room."

Maya looked at Arthur, her eyes burning with a terrifying, absolute victory.

"You can hear him, Detective. You can hear him telling my mother to turn the TV to volume twenty-five. You can hear him slide his wedding ring off onto the mantelpiece. And you can hear the exact moment he fractured my sister's skull while laughing about how much he missed our father."

The room fell dead silent. The only sound was the rhythmic beep of Maya’s heart monitor.

Detective Ramirez didn't hesitate. She looked at her partner. "Bag his phone. Cuff him. Now."

Arthur backed up against the wall, his hands shaking as the reality of the trap closed in on him. He looked at Eleanor, his voice dropping into a desperate, threatening hiss. "Ellie... tell them. Tell them she's lying. Tell them for the sake of our family."

Eleanor Finch looked at her husband. She looked at the man who had erased her identity, who had turned her into an accomplice to the torture of her own flesh and blood. She looked down at her spilled purse, then at the bruised, broken, yet fiercely unbroken faces of her twin daughters.

Something inside Eleanor—something that had been dead for five long years—snapped back to life.

She stood up straight, pulled her shoulders back, and looked Arthur Vance dead in the eye.

"They didn't fall down the stairs, Arthur," Eleanor said, her voice clear, resonant, and loud enough to echo down the entire hospital corridor. "You threw them down. And I watched you do it."
