Chapter 4 - The Reclaimed Self

The island was a blur of emerald green and turquoise water. It had been six months since I’d left the life that had been designed for me. I lived in a small, weathered cottage on the coast, miles away from the socialite circles and the fake dinner parties.

I spent my days writing and my evenings walking along the beach, listening to the tide pull at the sand. I was leaner, stronger, and my skin had lost the pallor of a woman who lived under constant surveillance.
One afternoon, I found a letter waiting for me in the village post office. It was from the court, forwarded by my secondary address.
Daniel’s divorce decree was finalized. The judge had not only granted the divorce but had ordered him to pay back the portion of the household funds he had siphoned before I could secure them—a sum he would spend the rest of his life paying off.
Olivia had disappeared, leaving him with a mountain of legal debt and a reputation that had been thoroughly incinerated by the local press.
He was a ghost. A forgotten man.
I didn't feel the need to celebrate. I simply read the document, folded it neatly, and placed it in the small drawer where I kept the letters from my grandmother.
