Chapter 3 - THE MAN INSIDE THE DOOR

Nico did not confront Sal after the attack. He ordered him to secure the club and behaved as though the recording had revealed nothing beyond Gavin’s involvement. Sal accepted the performance because betrayal had made him overconfident.
Elena entered protective housing under the supervision of Detective Lena Ortiz, an investigator assigned to organized crime and violence against vulnerable employees. Elena retained her own attorney and authorized the task force to examine her payroll records, cloud files, and communications.
The evidence gave her something fear had taken away in Gavin’s office: a sequence she could control.
She identified each false security vendor, explained the Regency’s approval process, and marked the invoices Gavin ordered her to alter. Investigators compared the payments with access logs, surveillance outages, and financial accounts connected to Sal.
Nico contributed internal security records at significant risk to himself. The records implicated the Doyles and exposed unlawful Valenti operations that had nothing to do with Elena’s assault. His attorney warned that cooperation might save lives without saving him from prosecution.
Nico provided them anyway.
Elena noticed an inconsistency investigators initially missed. One false company had received payment for replacing locks inside the Harbor Room, but the Regency’s maintenance system showed no completed work order. The payment was not for new locks. It was a disguised payment for copied access credentials.
Only four people had downloaded the original floor plan. Sal was one.
The task force created a controlled test. Nico told Sal that Elena’s complete recording was stored in a private evidence locker under her attorney’s name. No one else inside the Valenti organization received that information.
Six hours later, a man carrying forged identification attempted to access the locker. Officers arrested him and recovered messages directing him to destroy “the Marsh copy.” The messages came from a disposable phone repeatedly located near Sal’s apartment and the Onyx Room.
Sal disappeared before officers could reach him.
Elena believed she was safe until someone knocked on the protected apartment door that evening. The officer posted outside had been called downstairs by a report of smoke in the building. Through the peephole, Elena saw Sal standing in the hall.
“Nico sent me,” he called. “The location is compromised.”
Elena’s body remembered his cigarette smoke before her mind formed his name. She stepped backward without answering and activated the silent alarm Detective Ortiz had given her.
Sal tried the handle. “Elena, we don’t have time.”
She retreated into the reinforced bedroom and locked the second door. “What did Gavin promise you?”
Silence followed.
Then Sal’s voice changed. “Enough money to stop kneeling to a man younger than me.”
The answer confirmed his motive without Elena needing to see his face. Sal had watched Nico inherit influence, loyalty, and territory he believed his years of service entitled him to share. The Doyles promised him control of the Onyx properties after Nico’s murder.
“You left me in the alley because you knew who I was,” Elena said.
“I thought Gavin had handled it.”
The phrase made her grip the phone harder.
Sal forced the outer door just as the building alarm sounded. Elena pushed a dresser against the bedroom entrance and kept him talking while officers raced upstairs.
“Did you tell Gavin to attack the club?”
“He panicked because you survived.”
“And Marco died because of that.”
“Marco chose his side.”
The bedroom door shuddered beneath Sal’s shoulder. Elena did not wait for another impact. She opened the window leading to the building’s fire balcony, crossed into the adjoining secured unit, and locked the exterior partition behind her.
Sal breached an empty room.
Officers reached the hallway seconds later. Sal fired through the apartment door, wounded one detective, and escaped down a service stairwell before the ground exits were sealed.
Elena had preserved the apartment’s audio through the emergency system. Sal’s statements about Gavin, the alley, and the Onyx attack were recorded automatically after she triggered the alarm.
Nico arrived only after Detective Ortiz confirmed the building was secure. He found Elena seated beneath a borrowed blanket while a medic examined her hands.
“I should have known he would find the location,” Nico said.
“That was not your decision alone.”
“I brought his betrayal close to you.”
“He came because I have evidence. That is his choice, not mine and not yours.”
Nico looked toward the damaged doorway. “I can end this without another courtroom.”
“You mean kill them.”
“I mean make certain they never reach you again.”
“And then every lie they told becomes a story people can argue about. I want Gavin alive when the recording plays. I want Sal alive when Marco’s family hears what he did.”
Nico had spent his life equating protection with the destruction of threats. Elena asked him to protect her by respecting the outcome she chose.
He finally nodded. “Then we do it your way.”
Sal sent one message to Nico before dawn.
BRING ELENA’S RECORDING TO THE HARBOR ROOM, OR THIS CITY KEEPS BLEEDING.
Elena read it over Detective Ortiz’s shoulder.
“He still thinks the evidence belongs to you,” she said.
May you like
Nico looked at her.
“Let him.”
