Chapter 2 - The Digital Shadow

The screen filled with grainy, night-vision footage. Audrey watched in horror as her own life played out in front of her. Not just the last few days, but the last six months.

There she was, three months pregnant, sleeping in the master suite. The camera angle was tucked high in the crown molding, a perspective she hadn't authorized. There she was, talking to her lawyer on the phone, the audio picking up every word, every secret, every strategy.
"They weren't just watching me," Audrey whispered, her breath hitching. "They were auditing me."
She scanned the timestamps. The camera hadn't been activated by Colin. It had been activated by a remote trigger from the Miami server. Every time she had been "emotional," as Colin called it, or every time she had checked her bank balances, a log entry was generated.
She wasn't just being managed; she was being evaluated for a hostile takeover of her own assets. The "space" Colin had demanded was just the time he needed to ensure she had no leverage.
The sound of a notification chimed on her laptop. An email from the listing broker, triggered by Rachel’s early, tentative contact. “Listing agreed upon. Photographer arriving at 0900 tomorrow to capture the estate for the public market.”

Audrey felt a dark smile spread across her face. If they wanted her out, if they wanted the house to be a stage for their corporate drama, she would give them a performance they wouldn't survive. She typed a quick command, not to wipe the system, but to set a 'dead-man's switch' on the home’s server. If the power were cut, or if the listing went live, a pre-programmed script would dump the last six months of "Compliance Verification" footage directly onto the public cloud server of the local Asheville news station.
She packed her laptop away, the cold rain still dripping from her coat. She had a plan. But as she pulled out of the storage facility, the blue-and-red strobes of a federal cruiser blinded her.
