Chapter 5 - The Commander's Verdict

Preston trembled, his knees nearly buckling as he looked from the uniform to Rowan. She was sitting up in bed, looking radiant, holding a cup of tea. Her eyes were like flints of gray ice.
"Rowan... what... what is this?" he stammered, his voice cracked with terror. "The feds... they frozen my firm's assets. They seized my parents' house this morning. They said it was tied to a federal investigation into military grant fraud and corporate embezzlement. Sloane has already turned on me—she signed a confession an hour ago!"
Rowan took a slow, deliberate sip of her tea, setting the cup down with a soft click.
"You called me a quiet little government paper-pusher, Preston," she said, her voice low, resonant, and dripping with absolute authority. "What you failed to realize is that the paperwork I push controls the logistics of the United States military. The assets you tried to hide were flagged by my department months ago. I held the line because I wanted to believe my husband was merely failing, not criminal. But you brought your crime into my sanctuary."
"Rowan, please!" Preston fell to his knees beside the bed, reaching out to grab her hand, but one of the MPs instantly stepped forward, his hand resting meaningfully on his holster. Preston drew his hands back, weeping. "I didn't know! I swear I didn't know! We can fix this! For the babies! For the twins!"
"The twins are Whitlocks by name, but they are mine by right," Rowan said, leaning forward, her gaze pinning him to the floor. "You brought divorce papers to a woman in a high-risk labor ward. You called me worthless. You tried to steal my children to build a fantasy life with your accomplice."
She pulled the manila envelope from her bedside table and tossed it onto his lap.
"I've amended your papers. You will sign a full relinquishment of custody. You will sign over the remaining un-seized equity of your personal estate to a trust fund for these boys. If you do, I will instruct the federal prosecutor to accept your plea deal without requesting maximum sentencing. If you don't..."
She paused, a cold, terrifying smile touching her lips.
"...I will ensure you serve every single day of the twenty-year maximum in a federal penitentiary. Do you understand me, Preston?"
Preston looked up at the silver eagles on the uniform, then at the absolute, unshakable power radiating from the wife he had dismissed for twelve years. The realization of his monumental mistake crashed down on him, breaking what was left of his arrogance.
With trembling hands, he took a pen from his pocket and signed the amended documents on his knees.

"Take him away," Colonel Whitlock ordered softly.
The agents led the broken man out of the room. Rowan turned her head to look out the window at the Virginia skyline, then looked down at her two sleeping sons. The silence in the room was no longer heavy. It was peaceful. It was victorious.
