Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

At 10:30 a.m., Victor Hale sat in his high-end corner office at Hale & Associates in downtown Princeton. He had just finished a call with his attorney, feeling immensely satisfied with himself. Lena hadn't filed a police report, her mother was an old woman who couldn't do anything, and his secrets were perfectly safe behind his Swiss encryption. He adjusted his silk tie, leaning back in his leather chair as he stared out the window at the manicured plaza below.

Suddenly, his desk phone rang. It was his receptionist, her voice trembling.
"Mr. Hale? There are... there are federal agents in the lobby. They say they have a warrant for your arrest."
Victor's heart skipped a beat, but he quickly forced a laugh. "Tell them it's a mistake, Sarah. I'll be right out to clarify."
Before he could stand up, his office door was thrown open. Three men in dark suits with FBI windbreakers marched in, accompanied by two local police officers. Leading them was Maggie, Nora’s retired police friend, looking exceptionally sharp in a navy blazer.
"Victor Hale," the lead FBI agent said, pulling a set of handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, grand larceny, and money laundering."
"This is a joke!" Victor yelled, his face turning an angry red as he backed away from his desk. "On what grounds? You don't have any evidence! My accounts are entirely secure! You can't just barge in here—"
"Actually, we can, Victor," Maggie said, stepping forward and tossing a thick, bound folder onto his mahogany desk. The cover was stamped with the logo of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, but beneath it was the exact layout of his Red_Book directory. "We have your routing numbers, your offshore accounts, and the complete transaction history of the $4.2 million you stole from your clients—including your own daughter's college fund."
Victor stared at the folder, his eyes bulging as he recognized his own encrypted files, printed out in plain, high-definition text.
"How... how did you get this?" he stammered, his voice cracking as his perfect world began to collapse around him. "This was encrypted. No one has the keys to this. It’s impossible!"

"You forgot that some people actually know how to build things, Victor, instead of just stealing them," Maggie said with a cold, satisfied smile. "Your mother-in-law sends her regards."
As the agents grabbed Victor's arms and forced them behind his back, clicking the heavy metal handcuffs shut, the wealthy, arrogant vice president was completely broken. He looked around his office, realizing with absolute certainty that his career, his reputation, and his freedom were gone forever.
