Chapter 3 - The Inner Circle

By midnight, I had left Violet in the care of her grandmother, who had flown in on the red-eye from Seattle, and returned to the dark, silent house on Maple Drive. The police tape across the front door fluttered in the midnight breeze. I ducked beneath it, ignoring the chalk outlines on the hardwood floor, and walked straight to Violet’s bedroom.

If you want to know who a teenager is, you don't look at their diary; you look at their digital footprint.

I booted up her laptop. It wasn't locked with a complex password—just a simple four-digit pin based on her birthday. Inside, her desktop was clean, organized, and painfully normal. Photos of her track team, school projects, and playlists dominated the screen. But I wasn't looking for normal. I was looking for the shadows.

I opened her encrypted messaging app, knowing that teenagers today hide their real lives behind secondary chat spaces. It took me ten minutes to bypass the client-side encryption using a forensic extraction tool I kept on my encrypted flash drive.

What I found made my stomach turn.

It wasn't a random attack. It was a targeted, premeditated conspiracy orchestrated by people Violet trusted implicitly.

Messages flashed across the screen from a group chat titled The Inner Circle. The members: Tyler Vance, the star quarterback of Willowcrest High and son of the town’s mayor; Chloe Davies, Violet’s supposed "best friend" who had spent the last year eating dinner at our kitchen table; and an unknown user tagged as Ghost_99.

Tyler (13:50): Is the house clear?

Chloe (13:52): Her dad is in Cabo or somewhere out of state. He won't be back until Friday. Her mom is in Chicago. The coast is clear.

Ghost_99 (14:00): Did you get the flash drive from her room?

Chloe (14:03): We’re going to get it now. She thinks we’re just hanging out after school. If she doesn't hand it over, we’ll make her regret playing hero.

I scrolled further back, piecing together the terrifying puzzle. Violet had stumbled upon a massive illegal grading and test-selling ring operated by Tyler Vance and funded by local elites, including a cartel-linked real estate developer named Marcus Gable. Chloe had been helping them covertly siphon data from school servers using administrative credentials. When Violet discovered the flash drive containing proof of their corruption hidden in the school library, she had threatened to expose them.

They hadn't beaten her in a random robbery. They had ambushed her in her own home to retrieve incriminating evidence, using Chloe’s intimate knowledge of the house and Tyler’s administrative admin privileges to bypass our security system.

And then, as a parting message, they had left her for dead.

My phone buzzed again. A text message containing a single, high-resolution photograph and an address.

The photo showed Violet lying in her hospital bed, wires taped to her pale face.

The accompanying text read: Shame if something happened to her oxygen supply while you're out playing detective. Come alone to the old naval shipyard warehouse on Pier 4 if you want the flash drive back.

They wanted to draw me out. They wanted to execute an ambush.

They didn't realize that walking into a trap was exactly what a Tier-1 Ranger prays for.
