Chapter 2 - The Classified Legacy

"Sir," I said, keeping my voice steady despite the chaos threatening to erupt around us, "with all due respect, this is a public burial. This may not be the appropriate venue."
General Ellison didn’t blink. "I wish I could agree, Captain. But operational security dictates that the truth is delivered at the exact moment the subject's military file is unsealed."
Before I could reply, Diane shoved past Monica, her face contorted in rage. She marched right up to the general, her finger trembling as she pointed it toward his chest. "What the hell do you think you’re playing at? My son died serving his country! You have no right to bring a circus to his funeral!"
General Ellison slowly turned his head to look down at her. His eyes were cold, devoid of any sympathy. "Mrs. O’Connor, the Department of Defense has determined that certain facts concerning your son’s final years can no longer remain restricted."
"Then speak to his immediate family!" Diane shrieked, gesturing wildly toward Monica, who was now quietly sobbing into a lace handkerchief. "She is carrying his child! She is his grieving fiancée!"
I pulled my children closer, shielding their eyes from the spectacle, but my son Liam peeked through, whispering, "Mom, why is that man yelling at grandma?"
"Hush, baby, stay close to me," I murmured, my eyes never leaving the general.
General Ellison’s voice boomed over the pattering rain. "I am speaking to his immediate family."
Diane blinked, stunned. "What kind of sick joke is this? She"—Diane lunged forward, pointing a manicured nail directly at my face—"is nothing! She was discarded seven years ago! She divorced him!"
General Ellison turned back to face me, his posture relaxing fractionally into something resembling profound professional respect. "Captain Katherine Hunt remains the legally designated primary beneficiary, security clearance holder, and next-of-kin associated with all classified assets, properties, and unreleased service records connected to Caleb O’Connor."
Monica let out a sharp, choked cry, her knees buckling slightly as Richard rushed forward to catch her. "That’s impossible!" Monica choked out, her voice cracking with hysteria. "He changed everything! He told me he left everything to me and our baby!"
I stood frozen in the damp grass. My mind raced backward through the brutal divorce proceedings. Caleb had forced me out with nothing, claiming his military salary was tied up in classified overseas investments, leaving me to raise our triplets alone on my disabled veteran’s pension. He had told the courts he had nothing left to give.
"It was never changed," General Ellison stated flatly, pulling a crisp, heavily stamped legal document from the folder. "Under federal military code, certain high-level designations cannot be altered by a service member without active-duty authorization from their commanding officer—authorization that was systematically denied to Major O’Connor due to an ongoing internal counter-intelligence investigation."
The silence in the cemetery was absolute. Even the reporters near the gates had stopped filming, paralyzed by the sheer weight of the unfolding revelation.
Diane shook her head violently, tears of pure fury streaming down her cheeks. "Lies! All of it lies! Katherine engineered this! She’s a bitter ex-wife trying to steal what belongs to my grandchild!"

General Ellison ignored her entirely. He reached into the folder, extracted a flash drive encased in military-grade encryption steel, and extended it toward me on an open palm.
"Captain Hunt. The contents of this drive, along with Major O’Connor's true estate holdings, are now legally under your control. And trust me, ma'am—you are going to want to read what your late ex-husband spent the last seven years hiding from the world."
