Chapter 4 - The Midnight Audit and the Secret Ledger

The rain lashed against the massive stained-glass windows of the Whitmore estate like handfuls of gravel. It was 11:45 PM, and my shift should have ended hours ago, but Victoria had deliberately left a trail of mud and spilled red wine across the entire second-floor gallery, demanding it be pristine before Sunday morning brunch.

I was on my hands and knees near the eastern wing, carefully scrubbing a stubborn burgundy stain out of the antique Persian rug, when I noticed a faint line of amber light spilling out from beneath the heavy oak door of Charles Whitmore’s private study.

The door was cracked open by an inch.

I wouldn't have given it a second thought, except for the sound of a sharp, angry voice cutting through the quiet hum of the night.

"—are you out of your mind, Victoria?!" Charles’s voice boomed, thick with an icy fury I had never heard from him before.

I froze, my scrub brush hovering over the rug.

"Stop yelling at me, Dad!" Victoria’s voice snapped back, defensive and shrill. "The hotel acquisitions require capital! If I don't move funds from the domestic estate reserve accounts into my offshore venture, the deal falls through!"

"Estate reserve accounts?" Charles roared, slamming his fist down onto a mahogany desk so hard furniture rattled. "Those funds aren't yours to plunder! You’ve systematically drained over four million dollars from the residential operational trust over the last eighteen months without my authorization!"

Outside in the hallway, my heart skipped a beat. Four million dollars?

"It's my birthright!" Victoria fired back, her voice dripping with unhinged entitlement. "You're going to hand over the entire hotel group to me eventually anyway! I just accelerated the timeline. Besides, who's going to audit house accounts? The cook? The chauffeur?"

"I audited them, Victoria," Charles said, his voice dropping into a terrifying, glacial whisper. "And what's worse than the embezzlement... is where you hid the paper trail."

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the study.

"What... what are you talking about?" Victoria asked, her voice suddenly losing its arrogant edge, replaced by a flicker of genuine panic.

"You used forged signatures," Charles continued, every word landing like a sledgehammer. "You forged my signature on the primary trust dissolution papers, and to bypass internal compliance flags, you transferred authorization rights to an offshore shell company registered under a fake employee ID."

My breath caught in my throat. A fake employee ID?

"You're legally exposed, Victoria," Charles said coldly. "This isn't just corporate mismanagement. This is grand larceny and federal wire fraud. The board will strip your shares by Monday morning, and the federal prosecutor's office will receive the complete file."

"No," Victoria gasped, the sound choking and desperate. "You can't do that to your own daughter! You'll destroy the family name! Think of the press! Think of the stock prices!"

"I am thinking of the company I built with my bare hands," Charles replied firmly. "Pack your bags. You are cut off from every corporate account, every credit card, and every trust effective immediately. You're done."

Footsteps rushed toward the study door.

Panicking, I grabbed my bucket and scrub brush and scrambled backward down the dimly lit hallway just as the heavy oak door swung violently open.

Victoria stumbled out into the corridor, her face stark white, her eyes wild with absolute terror. She looked like a ghost who had just been sentenced to the gallows. She didn't see me crouching in the shadows near the tapestry. She just sprinted down the stairs, sobbing hysterically into her hands.

I stood up slowly, my legs trembling beneath me. The untouchable princess of the Whitmore empire had just been dethroned by her own greed.

And little did she know, the final trap was about to spring.
