Chapter 5 - A New Dawn in La Jolla

Six months later, the California sun was warm and brilliant, casting a golden glow across the lush green lawns of our La Jolla estate.

It was a Saturday morning, and the house was filled with the chaotic, beautiful sounds of a real family. The faint rattle of plastic toys, the gurgle of a very happy baby, and the rich aroma of pancakes drifting up from the kitchen.

I stood in the master bedroom, brushing my hair in front of the vanity mirror, smiling as I watched the reflection behind me.

Eric was sitting cross-legged on the center of the king-size bed—our bed, where it had all started six months ago—holding a now six-month-old Leo in his arms. Leo was laughing hysterically, grabbing aggressively at a tuft of Eric’s hair while kicking his chubby legs in matching blue striped pajamas.

The adoption was finalized two weeks ago. In the eyes of the law, and more importantly in the chambers of our hearts, Leo James Whitaker was completely, permanently ours.

“Hey, little man,” Eric whispered, nuzzling his nose against Leo’s tummy until the baby squealed with delight. “Are you ready to go down to the pool and show Mom your new swimming trunks?”

I walked over from the vanity, leaning down to press a soft kiss against Eric’s lips, then another against Leo’s warm, sweet-smelling cheek.

“He’s getting too heavy for you, billionaire,” I teased, resting my hand on Eric’s shoulder.

Eric wrapped his free arm around my waist, pulling me down onto the edge of the mattress beside them. He looked up at me, his dark eyes shining with a deep, bottomless devotion that still took my breath away every single day.

“Never too heavy,” Eric murmured softly, resting his forehead against mine. “I spent thirty years carrying the weight of my past around, Clara. Holding him... and holding you... is the first time in my life I’ve ever felt completely light.”

I smiled, my heart swelling with a fierce, unbreakable love as I looked down at our son, who was now babbling happily and trying to grab my gold necklace.

Life had thrown us a curveball in the darkest hour of our marriage. It had brought an unexpected, crying infant onto our bedroom pillows in the dead of night. But looking back, I knew that the terrifying midnight discovery wasn't a nightmare at all.

It was the beginning of our real life.
