Chapter 2 - The Coffin Opens and the Shocking Discovery

The heavy lid of the white silk-lined coffin swung upward, and a collective, terrified breath was drawn by hundreds of mourners.

Inside, Evelyn Ashford lay perfectly still. Her skin had an eerie, alabaster pallor, her dark hair framed her face like a porcelain doll, and her eyes were tightly closed. For several long, agonizing seconds, nobody moved. The cathedral was so quiet you could hear the distant hum of traffic outside on Fifth Avenue.

“See?” Dr. Cole stammered, stepping forward with a forced, trembling smile. “She is at peace, Richard. Let us proceed with the burial before—'

“Shut up,” Richard whispered, his voice dangerously low.

He didn't listen to the doctor. Instead, he stepped up onto the altar platform, dropped to his knees beside the satin-lined casket, and leaned his face inches from his wife’s cold face.

“Evelyn...” he choked out, his fingers brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from her forehead.

Then, remembering the boy’s warning, Richard’s hand moved down along her jawline. He gently pushed her hair aside to expose the pale skin beneath her left ear.

Richard froze. His breath hitched in his throat.

Right there, tucked neatly behind her left earlobe, was a tiny, perfectly round fresh puncture mark—surrounded by a faint, purplish-blue bruise that had not been there when she was first placed in the mortuary.

Dr. Cole backed away slowly toward the exit, his eyes darting frantically toward the heavy oak doors. “This... this is an ordinary post-mortem intravenous line insertion spot. Routine medical procedure.”

Richard slowly stood up from the casket, turning to face the physician. The raw grief on his face had completely vanished, replaced by a cold, murderous fury.

“Routine?” Richard’s voice shook the very rafters of the cathedral. “My wife was buried with a chemical paralysis agent, wasn't she? You injected something into her to fake her death!”

“I injected nothing!” Dr. Cole shouted defensively, raising his hands. “You’re out of your mind!”

Suddenly—

TAP.

The sharp, metallic sound echoed loudly from inside the open coffin.

Every single person in the cathedral froze in absolute terror. Sophie screamed, clutching her chest and stumbling backward into a velvet-draped pew.

TAP.

This time, it was louder.

Richard whipped around, dropping back to his knees beside the casket.

Evelyn’s pale fingers twitched against the satin padding.

Then, with sudden, unnatural violence, her right hand shot upward, her fingers curling over the edge of the polished mahogany rim of the coffin.

Gasps turned into full-scale shrieks as people stumbled over one another in the pews, terrified by what they were witnessing. A dead woman was moving.

Slowly, agonizingly, Evelyn’s eyelids fluttered open. Her pupils were dilated, struggling against the harsh cathedral lights, and her chest heaved with a shallow, rattling gasp of air as her lungs desperately fought to remember how to breathe.

“Mom?!” Sophie screamed, bursting through the crowd and falling to her knees beside Richard. “Oh my god... Mom, you’re alive!”

Richard leaned down, tears streaming unashamedly down his face as he cupped her cold cheek. “Evelyn... my god, Evelyn. Look at me. Who did this to you? Who put you in here?”

Evelyn struggled to speak. Her lips trembled, dry and cracked, and a thin line of saliva escaped the corner of her mouth. She fought for oxygen, her chest rising and falling in violent spasms.

Richard pressed his ear closer to her lips. “Evelyn, tell me. Was it Cole? Did Cole do this?”

Evelyn’s heavy, glazed eyes moved past Richard.

They moved past the trembling Dr. Cole, who was now pinned against a marble pillar by two of Richard’s armed bodyguards.

Evelyn’s gaze drifted slowly across the aisle, focusing on someone standing quietly near the back of the front-row family pews—someone standing directly behind Sophie.

Her lips parted, and she whispered four words that made Richard’s blood run instantly cold.

“He... knows... Caleb’s... mother.”

Richard slowly straightened up. The puzzle pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity. He turned around, his eyes locking onto the silver-haired figure standing uncomfortably close to his daughter.

Standing right there, wearing an expensive designer suit and offering a chilling, polite smile, was none other than Marcus Vance—Richard’s own chief corporate legal counsel, and the man who managed every single offshore trust tied to the Ashford estate.
