Chapter 2 - The Audit of a Parasite

Before Luca could gather enough breath to launch into another desperate round of excuses, the front doorbell chimed twice—sharp, rhythmic, and official.
Before anyone could move toward the entry, the heavy mahogany door swung open using a master electronic override key. Two men in sharp charcoal suits stepped into the foyer. They weren’t police officers; they were senior partners from Hale, Sterling & Vance Forensic Accounting—the very firm where I had spent the last eight years working as a senior forensic auditor while Luca thought I was just managing "part-time household bookkeeping."
The lead partner, a formidable woman named Marcus Vance, walked straight into the living room carrying a thick, leather-bound binder stamped with corporate red seals.
“Good morning, Mr. Sterling. Good morning, Mrs. Hale-Miller,” Marcus nodded respectfully, ignoring Luca entirely as he stepped past him. Marcus turned directly toward my husband, his expression cold and clinical. “Mr. Miller. My name is Marcus Vance. I am the lead forensic auditor retained by Mrs. Miller’s personal estate trust.”
Luca’s knees buckled slightly. He grabbed the back of the sofa to steady himself, his eyes darting frantically to the leather binder. “What is this? I haven't done anything illegal! This is a private residence! You can’t just—”.
“Actually, Mr. Miller, we can,” Marcus interrupted smoothly, flipping open the binder to a heavily tabbed financial ledger. “Over the past thirty-six months, our forensic review of your personal business checking accounts, shell LLCs, and corporate expense cards has uncovered a systematic pattern of embezzlement, wire fraud, and unauthorized asset transfers totaling two million, four hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”
The color didn't just drain from Luca’s face this time; it felt as though his entire world had been blown to atoms.
“That’s… that’s impossible!” Luca screamed, his voice cracking into a high-pitched shriek of pure terror. “Those were corporate development funds! My startup—Vertex Innovations—it needed liquidity! Jessi knows about those accounts! She signed off on them!”
I walked slowly across the room, stopping two feet away from him. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't need to.
“I never signed a single authorization for Vertex Innovations, Luca,” I said softly. “Remember three months ago when you asked me to clear a stack of ‘routine tax compliance paperwork’ while I was six months pregnant with morning sickness? You slipped three fraudulent corporate resolution forms into my pile, banking on the fact that I was too exhausted to read the fine print.”
Luca stared at me as if he were looking at a ghost. The realization that his brilliant, foolproof scheme to embezzle capital from my father’s venture network while quietly positioning himself to inherit my estate had been completely dismantled by the very woman he thought he had outsmarted hit him with the force of a freight train.
“You… you knew?” he whispered, his lips trembling. “All this time… you knew?”
“I’ve known for three months,” I replied evenly. “I just wanted to wait until my son was safely born before I took the garbage out. And tonight, the trash collection is right on schedule.”
Marcus Vance slid a single sheet of paper across the coffee table toward Luca, alongside a heavy silver pen.
“This is a voluntary confession and complete asset-surrender agreement, Mr. Miller,” Marcus said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. “It stipulates that you surrender all claims to joint marital property, renounce any future interest in Mrs. Miller’s personal or familial trusts, and agree to plead guilty to wire fraud and grand larceny without contesting the charges in open court. If you sign it now, my legal team will recommend a lenient probationary sentence with restitution terms. If you don’t sign it, the U.S. Attorney’s office will file federal indictments before the stock market opens on Monday morning.”
Luca stared at the paper as if it were a venomous snake. His chest heaved with violent, ragged breaths. He looked over at my father, who was gently kissing the top of my sleeping baby’s head, completely ignoring Luca’s existence. Then he looked at me—the woman he had abandoned in a hospital hallway just seventy-two hours ago.

“Jessi… please,” Luca sobbed, his knees finally giving out as he dropped heavily onto the hardwood floor, burying his face in his shaking hands. “We have a family! Think of the baby! Don’t do this to me!”
“You had a family, Luca,” I whispered, turning my back on him as I walked over to my father to stroke my son’s tiny cheek. “You just decided your mother’s birthday dinner mattered more.”
