Chapter 1 - The Descent into the Shadow’s Labyrinth

The iron gates of the Blackwood Estate did not open for just anyone. They parted for Anaëlle like jaws of a reluctant beast, groaning against the midnight dampness of upstate New York. At twenty-four, she was used to scraping by—piecing together rent from meager tips at a downtown cafe where the espresso machine hissed like an angry viper and the patrons barely looked at her face. But five hundred dollars for a single hour of private piano playing? It was a lifeline thrown to a drowning swimmer, even if the hand holding the rope belonged to a ghost.

She clutched the strap of her leather tote bag, her red dress—a modest vintage find she’d ironed thrice—rustling against her stockings. Her stilettos clicked rhythmically against the rain-slicked cobblestones of the courtyard. There were no guards visible, but she could feel them. Eyes carved into the darkness, tracking every breath, measuring her worth and her threat.

The grand mahogany front doors swung open silently before she could even raise her hand to knock. An empty foyer greeted her, lit only by the amber glow of a massive crystal chandelier that hung like a frozen waterfall from a three-story ceiling. And there, dead center in the cavernous room, sat the beast of the house: a custom Steinway grand piano, its polished ebony surface reflecting the distorted image of the ceiling above.

She approached it like a deer stepping onto thin ice. The air here smelled different—expensive, heavy with the scent of aged mahogany, rain, and a lingering trace of dark, masculine cologne that she couldn't quite place. She pulled out the cushioned bench and sat down. Her heart beat a frantic tattoo against her ribs.

The gilded grandfather clock against the far wall ticked with an unforgiving metronome precision.

8:58 p.m.

Two minutes. Two minutes until her contract officially began. She stared at the pristine white and black keys, her fingers hovering just millimeters above them. The coldness of the ivory radiated upward, chilling her fingertips. She closed her eyes for a single second, inhaling the suffocating stillness of the room.

And then, she felt it. A displacement of air. A silent ripple in the atmosphere that signaled she was no longer alone.

She didn't hear footfalls—he moved like a predator hunting in deep snow. Every muscle in her body locked. Her instinct screamed at her to whip around, to look her employer in the eye, to gauge the danger.

"Don't turn around," a voice murmured.

It wasn't a shout. It was low, velvet-smooth, carrying an effortless authority that scraped against her spine like a warm blade.

"Keep your eyes on the piano."

She froze, her breath catching in her throat. The voice came from right behind her, so close she could feel the faint body heat radiating past the wooden back of the bench.

"I'm coming closer," he continued, his tone dangerously calm. "You have no reason to be afraid. Unless you give me one."

She swallowed hard, her mouth tasting like dust. The slow, deliberate scuff of leather on hardwood began. One. Two. Three steps. He stopped directly behind her chair. She didn’t need to see him to know he was towering over her. She could feel the sheer gravitational pull of his presence, heavy and inescapable.

When his breath brushed the bare skin of her shoulder blade where her dress dipped low, a violent shiver racked her frame. Her skin prickled with goosebumps.

"You're not allowed to see me," he whispered, the words brushing against her ear. A brief pause followed, thick with anticipation. Then, quieter still: "I'm going to cover your eyes."

Her voice cracked, sounding impossibly small in the vast room. "Is that—is that really all you want from me? Just to play blindfolded?"

"Yes," his answer came instantly, hard as iron. "I'm going to blindfold you. You'll play just like this. No mistakes. Do you understand?"

She gripped the edge of the keyboard, her knuckles turning white. "And if I make one?"

He didn't hesitate for even a fraction of a second. "Then there will be a price."

May you like

Before she could form a reply, his hands moved. They were large, warm, and steady. She caught a sudden, overwhelming wave of his scent—rich amber, dark vetiver, and rain. It was intoxicating, a signature of absolute power. When the cool black silk of the blindfold wrapped around her temples and knotted snugly at the back of her head, the visual world vanished.

In an instant, light, space, and time were erased. There was only the absolute velvety blackness, the pounding of her own pulse, and the haunting, inescapable scent of the man standing in the dark with her.
