Chapter 3 - The Untraveling

That single word—okay—hit the room like a physical shockwave. It upset them more than any screaming match, weeping fit, or furious accusation I could have ever thrown their way. It stripped them of their power because it meant I no longer cared enough to fight for their approval.
Panic rippled through the dining room. Chloe immediately demanded that Julian follow her into the kitchen so she could “explain everything” in private. But Julian didn't budge. He stood his ground by the table, refusing to look at her. My father stammered, trying to rewrite history in real-time, telling Julian that he had completely misunderstood a harmless family dynamic, while my mother doubled down, loudly defending the assault as necessary “tough love and discipline.”
Julian ignored them completely. He kept his eyes locked on me as I turned toward the foyer to grab my coat.
Then, as I reached for the coat rack, Julian said something that completely contextualized why this entire evening had felt deeply wrong from the very first second I stepped through the door.
“She told me tonight was supposed to prove you were the problem,” Julian muttered, loud enough for everyone to hear. He looked at Chloe with absolute contempt. “She said if she could get you to snap in front of me, it would justify cutting you out of the family trust completely, and she’d finally have full control of the estate documents our parents are managing.”
Chloe let out a sharp, breathless gasp. “Julian, shut up! You’re spinning out of control—she’s lying to you!”
“No, Chloe,” Julian said, sliding his car keys out of his pocket and tossing them onto the dining table with a sharp clatter. “I’m done lying to myself. I came here tonight to meet my future fiancée’s family. Instead, I walked into a cult-like house of horrors run by abusers.”
He turned away from her, ignoring her frantic, tearful pleas, and walked straight toward the front door where I was slipping my arms into my coat.
“Wait,” Julian said softly, stopping a few feet away. “Let me drive you to the hospital. Your face... you need to get that checked out, and you need to file a report. I’ll be your witness. I saw everything.”
I looked up at him, studying the genuine shock and remorse in his eyes. For months, Chloe had bragged about Julian’s wealth, his high-profile law career, and how he was the golden ticket to her elite social standing. Now, that exact man was walking away from her, disgusted by the very people she thought made her superior.
“I don't need a ride to the hospital,” I replied, my voice steady and cold. “I need a rideshare, and I need to never step foot in this house again.”
“Then let me pay for the ride, and let me help you pack your things from wherever you’re staying,” Julian insisted, his voice unwavering. “I’m done playing games with them.”

Behind us, my father bellowed in rage, storming toward the foyer with his fists clenched. “You ungrateful little brat! Get out of my house right now, and don’t ever think you can come back!”
I didn't even flinch. I opened the front door, letting the cool night air hit my bruised face, and stepped out onto the porch. Julian stepped out right behind me, slamming the heavy oak door shut behind us, cutting off my family’s screaming voices in an instant.
