Chapter 4 - The Final Reckoning

The Russian enforcer didn't hesitate. Recognizing Dante Castellano—or realizing that their payday was about to vanish—he raised his revolver and aimed straight for Dante's chest.
In a fraction of a second that felt suspended in time, Dante moved with lethal, predatory speed. His hand whipped out, the suppressed pistol clearing his holster with practiced smoothness. Two muffled thwips echoed through the cavernous warehouse.
The enforcer dropped his weapon, clutching his shoulder as he stumbled backward into a stack of empty pallets. The second enforcer lunged for a submachine gun slung across his chest, but before his fingers could wrap around the grip, three of Dante's guards emerged from the shadows, their assault rifles laser-sighted dead on the men's chests.
"Drop your weapons or join your ancestors," Dante commanded, his voice cold enough to freeze boiling water.
The Russian enforcers dropped their guns to the concrete floor, raising their hands in surrender.
Mark dropped to his knees, trembling violently as the leather briefcase slipped from his nerveless fingers and hit the ground with a dull thud. The brass clasp popped open, spilling thick stacks of hundred-dollar bills and a small, sleek titanium hard drive across the filthy floorboards.
"Don't kill me," Mark whimpered, pressing his palms against the wet concrete. "Please, Dante. Take the money, take the drive, take everything! Just let me walk away."
Dante walked slowly toward him, his leather shoes clicking sharply against the concrete. He stopped inches from Mark, looking down at the broken man with absolute contempt.
"You stole from men who kill without hesitation," Dante said quietly, his voice carrying an eerie calmness. "You endangered a woman who trusted you, and you threatened an unborn child who had no voice in your greed."
Dante raised the butt of his pistol and brought it down hard across Mark's temple. Mark crumpled instantly into a heap, unconscious before he even hit the floor.
Dante turned around, looking toward the guards. "Secure the drive and secure Mr. Tanner. Send him to the federal prosecutor in Manhattan with my personal compliments. Tell them Mr. Castellano has provided all the evidence required to lock him away for the rest of his natural life."
"Yes, Boss," the lead guard saluted sharply, moving forward to zip-tie Mark's wrists and scoop up the titanium drive.
Dante walked back toward me, the harsh warehouse lighting casting long shadows across his chiseled features. He stopped a foot away, his dark eyes searching my face with an unreadable expression.
"It's over, Eliza," he said softly, the terrifying mafia boss momentarily replaced by something infinitely more grounded. "You're safe. The Bratva will not come after you—they know better than to cross my territory once a debt is settled. And Mark will never be able to touch you or your child again."
I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for three agonizing weeks. My shoulders slumped, and for the first time since that cold afternoon in the clinic, the crushing weight in my chest began to lift.
"Thank you, Dante," I whispered, wiping a stray tear from my cheek. "I don't know how I'll ever repay you."
May you like
"You don't owe me anything," Dante replied, offering a faint, reassuring smile that softened the hard lines of his face. "You showed remarkable courage tonight, Eliza. More than most seasoned soldiers manage in their first firefight."
He gently escorted me back toward the armored SUV, opening the door and shielding my head from the relentless rain.
