Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of a Setup

The realization hit me like a physical blow to the chest, driving the air straight out of my lungs.

Gustavo’s private clinic.

For the past five years, Gustavo had operated an upscale, experimental pharmacology and private research center on the outskirts of São Paulo. He had always claimed his work focused on advanced neurological recovery and metabolic optimization therapies, funded by wealthy private investors from abroad. We had all been proud of his supposed success, praising his brilliant medical mind during family dinners and holiday gatherings.

Now, standing in the cold chapel under the harsh glare of police authority, the terrifying puzzle pieces violently snapped together into a grotesque, sickening picture.

“You son of a bitch,” I snarled, lunging forward with a blind, feral rage that bypassed all human reason.

Before I could reach him, the police officer intercepted me, planting a firm arm across my chest to hold me back. “Stay back, Mr. Silva! Let the law handle this!”

Gustavo stumbled backward, sliding down the wall until he hit the marble floor, his hands covering his face as he began to hyperventilate. The facade of cold, calculated arrogance had completely shattered, leaving behind a pathetic, cornered coward.

“It wasn't supposed to happen like this!” Gustavo sobbed out, his voice cracking hysterically as he pointed a shaking finger toward the empty coffin. “She wasn't supposed to wake up! The dosage was calculated perfectly! It was supposed to mimic death for forty-eight hours!”

The officer clicked his handcuffs into place, stepping over to haul Gustavo up from the floor and forcefully press him against the wall to read him his rights.

“Mr. Gustavo Ribeiro, you are under arrest for attempted homicide, kidnapping, fraud, and illegal administration of controlled substances,” the officer stated clearly, snapping the metal cuffs around his wrists with a sharp, metallic click.

I stood frozen, my mind racing through a labyrinth of unimaginable horror. My wife had never been in a highway crash at all. There had been no rain-slicked asphalt, no crushed sedan, no sudden impact. It had all been an elaborate, meticulously staged fabrication engineered by her own brother.

Why? Why would Gustavo want his own sister dead? Why fake a gruesome highway accident and rush her straight into a crematorium before an autopsy could ever be performed?

The answer hit me with sickening clarity: money.

Two months earlier, Ana’s wealthy grandfather had passed away, leaving behind a massive real estate and corporate inheritance. According to the old family trust, the entire multi-million-dollar estate was divided equally between Ana and Gustavo, with a massive supplemental trust clause explicitly stipulating that upon the birth of Ana’s first child—our son Miguel—the primary controlling shares of the entire corporate portfolio would automatically transfer directly to Ana and her direct heirs, completely cutting Gustavo out of executive control.

If Ana and the unborn baby died together, the entire fortune would revert exclusively to Gustavo as the sole surviving immediate relative.

He hadn't just stolen our lives; he had planned to burn his own pregnant sister and his nephew alive in an industrial furnace just to cash out a bank account.

“You monster,” I whispered, stepping right up to him as the officer escorted him toward the exit. “You were going to burn them alive. Your own sister. Your own blood.”

Gustavo didn't look at me. His eyes were glued to the floor, tears of pure self-pity leaking from his eyes as he muttered incoherently to himself, defeated by his own microscopic margin of error—the simple, miraculous movement of a baby kicking inside a mother’s womb that refused to stop fighting.

The police officer turned to me, his expression softening slightly with professional sympathy. “Mr. Silva, you need to get to the hospital immediately. Your wife and son are en route to Hospital das Clínicas. Backup units will secure her room, and forensic investigators are already sealing your brother-in-law’s clinic as we speak.”

I nodded slowly, the adrenaline finally giving way to an overwhelming wave of exhaustion and trembling relief. I turned away from the man who had tried to murder my family, grabbed my coat, and ran out of the chapel into the bright São Paulo afternoon sunlight.

For the first time since yesterday afternoon, the heavy, suffocating darkness that had wrapped around my soul began to fracture. The nightmare was far from over, but the truth was finally out in the open, and my family was still breathing.
