Chapter 3 - The Grand Re-Introduction

The crystal champagne flutes were clinking merrily in the living room as Sabrina raised her hand for attention, her voice dripping with triumphant, self-satisfied honey. “And as many of you know, transitioning a high-end luxury brand into the Edina market requires absolute perfection, flawless execution, and—most importantly—uncompromised financial backing,” Sabrina announced to the gathering of wealthy socialites and local investors, flashing a dazzling smile that could have blinded a pilot. “Some people think building an empire is difficult, but when you have absolute clarity, unyielding vision, and zero dead weight holding you back, everything falls effortlessly into place.” A ripple of polite, admiring laughter swept through the room. Several investors nodded approvingly, clutching expensive leather folders containing the final partnership and co-signatory contracts that Sabrina was preparing to distribute.

From my quiet seat at the kitchen island, I took a slow, deliberate sip of my coffee, watching the theatrical performance unfold. Zachary was standing awkwardly near the hallway archway, sweating profusely despite the central air conditioning, casting nervous glances in my direction as if desperately hoping I would magically vanish into thin air before the contracts were signed. Sabrina turned her gaze toward the kitchen, spotting me sitting there like an inconvenient piece of antique furniture she hadn't quite gotten around to throwing out yet. A flicker of annoyance crossed her pristine features before she masked it back over with her professional hostess smile. “Oh, and for those of you wondering about the eccentric older gentleman quietly reading the paper in the corner—that’s just Thomas,” she announced loudly to her guests, letting out a light, patronizing chuckle. “He’s a retired meat warehouse night-shift worker who kind of... well, let’s just say he’s a lingering fixture of the property who doesn't quite understand modern business. But don't worry, he stays out of our hair while we build our future!”

A few guests chuckled uncomfortably, eyeing me with a mix of pity and condescension. Sabrina turned back to her investors, picking up a gold-plated Montblanc pen and sliding the top contract across the coffee table toward a prominent local real estate developer named Marcus Vance. “If you’ll just sign right here, Marcus, the two-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar initial equity stake is officially locked in, and Barrett Beauty flagship officially begins construction on Monday.” Marcus reached out his hand to take the pen, his eyes scanning the corporate entity name listed on the header line. Suddenly, the sharp, authoritative thud of heavy leather boots echoed loudly on our front porch, followed immediately by three heavy, official raps on the front door. The doorbell didn't even ring—it was an unmistakable command.

Zachary jumped nearly two feet in the air, nervously shuffling toward the entryway as the front door swung open. It wasn't a delivery driver or a late guest. Stepping into the foyer were two uniformed Ramsey County Sheriff’s deputies, flanked by Georgia—my accountant—holding a thick leather briefcase, and our corporate legal counsel, Arthur Pendelton, wearing a sharp charcoal suit that radiated legal execution. The lively chatter in the living room instantly evaporated, replaced by a suffocating, dead silence. Sabrina’s golden smile froze awkwardly on her face as she dropped her gold-plated pen onto the coffee table with a sharp clatter. “Can... can I help you officers?” Sabrina stammered, stepping forward with a nervous, forced laugh. “This is a private corporate brunch. You must have the wrong address.” The lead deputy didn't even look at her. His cold, steely eyes scanned the room until they locked directly onto Sabrina and Zachary, before shifting respectfully toward me sitting quietly at the kitchen island.
