Chapter 2 - The Unforgivable Blow

My breath hitched in my throat as my father’s hands closed around the blanket holding my infant son. The sheer audacity of his actions paralyzed me for a split second. This wasn't a joke, and it certainly wasn't a misunderstanding. They genuinely believed they could bully, manipulate, and steal a member of my family right out from under me simply because Jason and Megan wanted a baby.
"You’ve got three. He has none," Richard repeated coldly, his face hardening as he attempted to lift my newborn from the bassinet and pass him directly into my brother's trembling arms.
Panic—sharp, primal, and electric—erased every ounce of post-surgical weakness in my body. Ignoring the agonizing pull of my stitches, I lunged forward across the mattress, grabbing my infant son back against my chest with a fierce, unbreakable grip.
"Don't you ever touch my son!" I screamed, tears of absolute rage springing to my eyes.
Before I could pull back, my father’s hand lashed out.
Crack.
The sound of an open-handed strike echoed sharply off the sterile hospital walls. The blow caught me squarely across the side of my head, sending a dizzying wave of white-hot pain crashing through my skull. My vision blurred for a fraction of a second, and I slumped back against the pillows, my ears ringing violently.
For a terrifying heartbeat, the room went completely dead silent.
My mother gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth. Jason looked genuinely panicked, taking a half-step backward toward the door. But Richard merely stood there, breathing heavily, adjusting his suit jacket with an expression of cold, unrepentant arrogance.
"You are hysterical, Rachel," my father spat, his voice devoid of a single ounce of remorse. "You're clearly not in your right mind after the surgery. We are doing this for the good of the family. Hand the baby over before you embarrass yourself further."
I didn't scream. I didn't cry out in agony. A cold, terrifying clarity settled deep into my bones. The veil had been completely ripped away, exposing the rot at the core of the family I had spent my entire life trying to please. They didn't love me. They didn't respect me. They viewed me merely as an incubator—an accidental vessel that had yielded an oversupply of children, and they felt entirely entitled to redistribute my flesh and blood as they saw fit.
With trembling, bloodless fingers, I didn't reach for my phone to call David in London. Instead, I reached out my right hand and pushed the emergency nurse call button mounted directly beside my hospital bed.
BEEP.
The electronic chime rang out softly, signaling an immediate, high-priority priority alert to the nurses' station down the hall.
"What do you think you're doing?" Susan hissed, stepping forward and grabbing the edge of my blanket. "Turn that off! Do you want to make a scene in front of the hospital staff?"
"Yes," I whispered, a dark, dangerous smile touching my lips as I clutched my baby tightly against my heart. "I think it's time to invite some witnesses into the room."
Within ten seconds, the heavy door swung open wide. Two heavy-set private security guards employed by the luxury Chicago clinic, flanked by the head charge nurse and the attending physician, rushed into the suite, their eyes darting rapidly across the tense tableau.
"Is there a medical emergency?" the doctor demanded, stepping forward.
Before my father could spin his web of lies, I raised my chin, locked my eyes onto the doctor, and let the entire, horrifying truth spill out for the very first time.

"Doctor," I said clearly, my voice ringing with absolute authority. "My father just physically assaulted me, striking me across the head while I was recovering from major abdominal surgery, because I refused to let him steal one of my newborn triplets and hand him over to my brother."
The room erupted.
