Chapter 4 - The Midnight Raid

By Thursday night, the hospital grew deathly quiet. The frantic daytime energy of doctors, visitors, and nurses faded into the eerie, fluorescent-lit hum of the overnight shift.

At 11:45 PM, the lock on my suite door clicked softly.

I kept my eyes closed, regulating my breathing into a slow, rhythmic pattern as two figures slipped into the darkened room. They didn't bother turning on the overhead lights; they relied on the pale amber glow of the streetlights filtering through the window blinds.

“Is he breathing?” a raspy, unfamiliar voice whispered. It belonged to a hulking man in a dark security uniform—a private bouncer Marcus must have hired for the night's dirty work.

“Check the monitors,” Anthony’s voice hissed from the doorway. He sounded jittery, desperate, high on cheap scotch and adrenaline. “Just pull the nasal cannula and disconnect the IV drip. Sterling said if anyone asks, his system simply suffered a catastrophic cardiac collapse due to preexisting trauma from the crash.”

The heavy-set bouncer stepped up to my bedside. I could sense his massive shadow looming over me, smelling of stale tobacco and cheap cologne. A heavy, calloused hand reached out, grabbing the plastic oxygen tubing taped across my cheek.

My muscles tensed like coiled steel springs beneath the sheets. I counted down the seconds in my head, waiting for the exact moment of maximum exposure.

Three... two... one...

Before the bouncer could rip the tubing away, the heavy oak door of the suite was violently kicked open, crashing against the drywall with a deafening bang that shook the entire room.

“FBI! Federal law enforcement! Nobody move!”

A blinding flood of tactical flashlight beams cut through the darkness, illuminating the room like daylight. Heavily armed federal agents in full body armor swarmed through the doorway, their assault rifles instantly trained on Anthony and the hired bouncer.

“Hands on your head! Drop to the floor! Do it now!” a federal marshal roared, tackling Anthony face-first onto the linoleum floor before the cowering cousin could even draw his breath to scream.

The hulking bouncer froze, his hands still hovering inches from my face. Two tactical agents slammed him against the wall, kicking his legs out from under him and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists with a sharp, mechanical clatter.

Anthony squirmed on the floor, his nose pressed against the hospital tile, whining hysterically as a federal agent read him his Miranda rights.

“This is a mistake! You can’t do this! We’re legal representatives of the Vance estate!” Anthony shrieked, spittle flying from his lips.

From the doorway, a tall, striking woman in a sharp charcoal pantsuit stepped into the room, her expression carved out of absolute ice. She pinned Anthony with a look of pure disdain before walking straight up to my bed.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Jenkins looked down at me as I slowly opened my eyes, pushed the hospital blanket off my chest, and sat upright against the pillows for the first time in five days.

“You look like hell, Julian,” Sarah remarked dryly, though a faint, respectful smile touched her lips.

“And you look like a vision of federal justice, Sarah,” I rasped, taking a cup of water from the bedside table and draining it in three long, desperate gulps.

I swung my legs over the side of the hospital bed, feeling the sharp, throbbing ache of my fractured ribs, but I didn't care. Adrenaline was a far better painkiller than anything Dr. Sterling had prescribed.

I stood up, towering over my cowering cousin on the floor.

“Take him away, Sarah,” I commanded quietly, pointing down at Anthony. “And while you’re at it, dispatch units to Marcus’s townhouse, the corporate headquarters, and the hospice downtown. Pick up Marcus, pick up Dr. Sterling, and have my lovely fiancée waiting in handcuffs when she wakes up for her morning coffee.”

Sarah nodded briskly, signaling two agents to haul Anthony up by his arms. “We already have the warrants signed by a federal judge thirty minutes ago, Julian. Based on the encrypted hard drive and financial ledgers provided by your... very resourceful housekeeper, your entire corporate cartel is going away for a very long time.”

Just then, Elena stepped out from behind the cluster of tactical agents in the hallway, offering me a shy, triumphant smile. I nodded back to her, silently acknowledging the woman who had saved my life while high-society parasites treated her like a ghost.

The trap was sprung. The wolves were caged. And the empire belonged to its true master once more.
