Chapter 2 - The Freeze Protocol

Adrian’s voice over the speakerphone dropped an octave, turning sharp and cold. "Has he threatened you or the child?"
"He has formally demanded that I vacate the premises," I replied clearly, my gaze locked onto Marcus’s tightening jaw. "He has packed my belongings, brought an unauthorized individual into our primary residence, and initiated a hostile lockout while I am three days post-op from major surgery."
"Understood," Adrian responded, the sound of rapid computer keystrokes clicking in the background. "Executing Section Four of the master trust agreement. Freezing all primary and secondary corporate accounts linked to Marcus Vale, revoking his corporate card authorizations, and dispatching a bailiff with the county sheriff's department to serve immediate notice of asset sequestration and structural eviction."
Marcus lunged forward, his face draining of all color as panic suddenly hijacked his features. "What is that? Who are you talking to? Put the phone down, Claire! You can't just—what are you doing?"
I lowered the phone slightly, letting him hear the mechanical precision in Adrian’s voice as the attorney authorized the shutdown of every single line of credit, operating capital account, and discretionary fund associated with Vale Meridian Holdings.
"You told me to get out, Marcus," I said calmly, stepping backward so that the heavy oak door remained propped open behind me, letting in the fresh, clean air of reality. "You assumed that because I managed the books from behind the scenes, I was merely an employee in your life. You forgot a fundamental rule of corporate governance: never bite the hand that owns the holding company."
Vanessa dropped her wineglass. The crystal shattered against the imported Italian tile, sending dark red liquid splattering across the pristine white floor like a warning shot. "Marcus, what is she talking about? Tell her to stop!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Marcus roared, spinning around to face her before snapping his attention back to me, his hands trembling as he reached out toward my arm. "Claire, listen to me. This is a misunderstanding. We've been married for six years, we have a child—"
"A child you didn't ask about once," I interrupted, my voice devoid of warmth or hesitation. "A home you bought with loans backed by my personal trust assets. A career you built on top of my intellectual property portfolios."
Before Marcus could formulate another panicked denial, the sharp wail of sirens echoed from the driveway outside. Headlights swept across the tall arched windows of the foyer as two county sheriff cruisers pulled up directly behind his imported sports car, their emergency strobes casting long, flashing red and blue shadows across the marble pillars.

Simultaneously, my phone buzzed with an urgent notification alert from our primary banking portal. Every single credit card, discretionary fund, and corporate expense account bearing Marcus’s name had just been flagged, locked, and restricted pending forensic audit.
Marcus stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish pulled out of water, finally realizing that the ground beneath his feet had completely vanished.
