Chapter 3 - The Tables Turn

Word travels fast in a small town, but digital media travels infinitely faster. By the time Detective Miller finished reviewing the full contents of the ledger, my sister's viral livestream had already generated over half a million views, flooded with hostile comments condemning me. Trolls were calling me a monster, a vulture, and a disgrace to the medical profession. My phone, buzzing endlessly inside an evidence bag on the corner of the desk, was likely a graveyard of hate messages.

Detective Miller slid a cup of black coffee across the table toward me. His demeanor had shifted entirely from skeptical interrogator to protective ally.

"Drink up, Joyce. You're going to need your strength," Detective Miller said, pulling out a legal pad. "Your parents made a fatal mistake. By filing a formal police report and initiating a public arrest using fraudulent documents, they crossed the line from private civil dispute into malicious prosecution and conspiracy to commit perjury. And thanks to your sister broadcasting the whole thing, we have ironclad proof of public defamation."

"What happens now?" I asked, my voice trembling as the adrenaline finally began to wear off, leaving a profound, aching exhaustion in its wake.

"Now, we turn the tables," Detective Miller replied with a grim, satisfied smile. "Your parents are currently hosting a post-funeral reception at the church hall, basking in their own perceived victory. They think they've won. They think you're locked away, disgraced and helpless. But my team is already executing search warrants on their primary residence and corporate bank accounts based on the forensic evidence inside this ledger."

He opened a laptop on the side table, spinning the screen toward me. "Look at this entry from three months ago. Your father forged your grandmother’s signature to transfer ownership of her commercial rental property directly into an LLC controlled secretly by him and your mother. That alone carries a mandatory prison sentence."

Just then, the precinct doors flew open, and raised voices echoed down the hallway. A junior officer hurried into the interrogation room, panting slightly.

"Detective Miller! You're not going to believe this," the officer announced, holding up a tablet. "Local news picked up the livestream from the church. But internet sleuths started zooming in on the background documents your mother was holding in the blue folder. They enhanced the high-res video frame-by-frame. People online have already matched the routing numbers on your mother's fake exhibits to shell accounts linked to your parents' personal businesses. The internet has turned on them completely. The hashtag #FraudulentFamily is currently trending nationwide."

Detective Miller laughed out loud, leaning back in his chair. "Well, well. It turns out your sister’s little stunt just became our greatest investigative asset. Public lynching streams work both ways when you're the one committing the crimes." He looked back at me, his eyes sharp. "Are you ready to walk back into that church hall, Joyce? Because my officers are ready to crash the luncheon."
