Chapter 4 - The Cathedral Showdown and the Unthinkable Act

Saturday morning arrived with the dramatic grandeur of a Hollywood epic.
St. Jude Cathedral on Michigan Avenue was an architectural masterpiece of towering stained-glass windows, soaring stone archways, and polished marble floors. By 11:30 a.m., all five hundred pews were packed to absolute capacity. It was the social event of the decade—a glittering sea of bespoke Italian suits, heirloom diamond necklaces, mink stoles, and powerful political figures trading hushed whispers beneath the vaulted ceilings.
In the front left pew sat Eleanor Vance, wearing an outrageously extravagant emerald-green silk gown that commanded attention. Atop her head sat her signature architectural masterpiece—an impossibly voluminous, perfectly coiffed silver-blonde wig that she wore with aristocratic pride, nodding regally to passing guests as if she were already queen of the city.
At the front of the aisle stood Gabriel Duca.
He wore a custom-tailored charcoal three-piece suit that fit his powerful frame like armor. His face was carved from granite, devoid of nerves or hesitation. Behind him stood Matteo Rizzo and a row of black-suited security men, standing shoulder-to-shoulder like an iron wall.
Olivia stood quietly near the side sacristy doors, wearing a simple, elegant navy-blue dress. Gabriel had explicitly ordered her presence at the front, refusing to explain why, leaving her heart racing with nervous dread.
At precisely 12:00 p.m., the heavy oak doors at the back of the cathedral swung wide open.
The organist struck the triumphant, earth-shaking chords of Wagner’s Bridal Chorus.
A collective gasp of admiration rippled through the congregation. Elena Vance appeared at the threshold, breathtaking in a custom Vera Wang gown encrusted with thousands of hand-sewn crystals, a twenty-foot silk train trailing behind her like liquid moonlight. On her arm walked her aging father, both of them wearing smug, triumphant smiles of total conquest. They had survived the security lockdown, beaten the internal investigation, and forced the most dangerous man in Chicago to bend the knee at the altar.
Elena walked slowly, regally down the marble aisle, soaking in the adoring glances of society elites.
When she finally reached the front steps, she released her father’s arm and stepped up to face Gabriel, her eyes shining with manic victory.
The priest stepped forward, clearing his throat to begin the ceremony. “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today—”
“Stop right there, Father,” Gabriel’s voice rang out. It wasn't loud, but it possessed a razor-sharp, hypnotic authority that cut through the cavernous cathedral like a gunshot.
The music ground to a grinding halt. The priest froze with his book open.
Elena’s smug smile faltered, replaced by a flash of sudden panic. “Gabriel? What are you doing? Everyone is watching.”
Gabriel didn't look at Elena. Instead, his dark, lethal gaze drifted past her, locking directly onto the front left pew where Eleanor Vance sat stiffly in her emerald-green gown.
“For six months,” Gabriel said, his voice echoing off the stone walls, “your family has sat at my table, smiled in my face, and systematically sold my operation to the Chicago syndicate council through a network of hidden microphones planted in my home.”
A deafening roar of shocked whispers exploded across the pews. Heads whipped back and forth.
Eleanor leaped to her feet, her face flushing a violent crimson. “How dare you! This is slander! This is a disgraceful public humiliation of my daughter—”
“It’s not a slander, Eleanor,” Gabriel interrupted smoothly, lifting his hand and giving a single, subtle snap of his fingers.
Before anyone could blink, Matteo Rizzo moved with terrifying speed.

Matteo crossed the chancel floor in three massive strides, bypassed a screaming Elena, lunged directly into the front pew, and before the elderly matriarch could even register what was happening, he grabbed the edges of Eleanor Vance’s massive silver-blonde wig and violently ripped it clean off her head!
A collective, blood-curdling shriek echoed through the cathedral.
