FIFTEEN HOURS UNTIL MIDNIGHT / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - THE BOARD SHE OWNED

At 10:20 PM, I entered Hawthorne Tower through the executive lobby.

For years, employees lowered their voices whenever my mother crossed that marble floor.

Tonight, nobody looked away from me.

News travels quickly inside a company built on secrets.

Maya walked beside me carrying the certified trust documents. Aaron and his team waited on another floor. They wouldn’t enter until the transaction reached its final authorization stage or someone attempted to flee.

Emily joined the meeting through a secure hospital connection.

I’d argued against it.

She told me to stop trying to protect her by hiding what had happened.

Fair point.

The boardroom doors opened at 10:29.

Eleanor sat in my father’s old chair.

Robert Vale was beside her. Susan and Thomas appeared on screens. Seven independent directors filled the remaining seats.

My mother wore a different suit from that morning.

Navy. Perfectly tailored. Pearls replaced with diamonds.

Fresh armor for the same rotten person.

“You’re late,” she said.

The clock read 10:29.

“I’ll try to recover the minute.”

Maya took the chair beside me.

Eleanor looked at her.

“This is an internal family matter.”

Maya opened her folder.

“Fraud involving a public company is rarely improved by calling it family.”

The corporate secretary began the meeting.

Eleanor interrupted.

“David Hawthorne lacks authority to convene this board.”

I placed Judge Reed’s order on the table.

“As of 3:10 PM, Eleanor Hawthorne was suspended as acting trustee of the Hawthorne Stewardship Trust. Voting control transferred to the named successor trustee.”

The secretary read the first page.

Then he looked at me.

“The successor is David Hawthorne.”

Eleanor didn’t blink.

“The document is invalid.”

Maya produced the executed original, the law firm’s custody certification, and forensic analysis showing that the version stored in the company archive had been digitally altered seven years earlier.

One director leaned forward.

“Who uploaded the altered version?”

Maya looked at Eleanor.

“Her executive credentials were used.”

My mother gave a tired smile.

“Credentials can be stolen. David has been under extreme emotional pressure caused by his wife’s unstable behavior.”

Emily’s face appeared on the wall screen.

Bruises marked her arms. A fetal monitor sat beside her bed.

Eleanor barely glanced at her.

Dr. Vance joined through another video link.

My mother straightened.

For half a second, relief crossed her face.

Then she noticed the federal attorney seated beside him.

Vance had agreed to cooperate.

He confirmed the forged healthcare proxy, falsified psychiatric records, sedation plan, and ownership arrangement inside Calder Meridian.

Eleanor listened with her hands folded.

When he finished, she said, “A disgraced physician will say anything to save himself.”

So we played Liam’s video.

The board watched Emily kneeling in the foyer.

They heard Eleanor order Vance to sedate her.

They heard her discuss the incapacity report and midnight transfer.

Nobody looked at me.

They couldn’t.

Shame gets very busy when it arrives late.

Robert stood.

“I was unaware of any violence.”

The security recording from dinner played next.

His own voice filled the room.

“You chained his pregnant wife to your chair.”

Robert sat back down.

Susan Keller disconnected from the meeting.

The secretary informed her that leaving wouldn’t remove her legal obligations.

She reconnected thirty seconds later.

At 11:17 PM, Daniel Price presented the bank’s findings.

The signature was forged.

The digital approval came from my executive office while I was traveling.

Building records showed Liam entered that office using Eleanor’s override credentials.

The funds were scheduled to pass through Calder Meridian and into Robert’s offshore vehicle.

Robert covered his face.

Thomas Brandt claimed he signed the board certification without reading it.

Maya stared at him.

“You certified a forty-eight-million-dollar transaction without reading one page?”

“I trusted Eleanor.”

“That isn’t a defense. It’s an admission with a necktie.”

Even Emily smiled at that.

My mother finally looked at me.

“You’ve made your point.”

“No.”

I leaned back.

“You still think this is about embarrassing you.”

“What do you want?”

“The truth entered into the record.”

“You want revenge.”

“I wanted pancakes.”

That shut her up.

“I came home carrying breakfast for my wife. You were using her body as a footrest while a doctor prepared to drug her. Everything after that is paperwork.”

Her eyes hardened.

“You were never strong enough to run this company.”

“You mistook cruelty for strength because cruelty was the only thing you were good at.”

The clock showed 11:42 PM.

Eighteen minutes remained.

The board voted to remove Eleanor as chair and terminate Robert, Susan, and Thomas pending investigation.

Every independent director voted yes.

Eleanor didn’t move when the result was announced.

She looked toward the clock.

Still waiting for midnight.

May you like

Still believing the money would give her leverage.

I let her.
