Chapter 4 - The Fall of Mercer & Mercer

By mid-afternoon, the corporate execution of Ethan Mercer was the talk of every financial blog, architectural journal, and high-society circle in the Twin Cities.
The story was too juicy, too Shakespearean to stay contained behind boardroom doors: The Billionaire Architect Abandoned His Bride in an Ice Storm for His Ex—Only to Have His Wife Lock Him Out of His Own Company Before Sunrise.
By 2:00 p.m., Vanguard Capital had officially pulled their twenty-million-dollar investment from Mercer & Mercer, redirecting the entire portfolio into a brand-new boutique architectural firm newly registered under Caroline’s sole name: Aethel Design Group.
By 4:30 p.m., three of the firm’s top senior structural engineers had resigned from Mercer & Mercer and formally accepted partnership offers at Caroline’s new company, taking their client lists and proprietary software licenses with them.
And Ethan?
Ethan was locked out of his office, his corporate email access revoked, his company credit cards declined at grocery stores, and his personal bank accounts frozen pending a federal investigation into corporate wire fraud.
Sitting alone in his sterile, echoing bachelor condo with the winter storm howling outside, Ethan stared blankly at his glowing phone screen.
His phone had been ringing nonstop for hours.
Not with supportive calls from business partners. Not with sympathetic texts from colleagues.
Instead, his screen was flooded with frantic notifications from Rachel Lowell.
“Ethan, what is going on?! My American bank account just got frozen! The four hundred thousand hasn't cleared!”
“The Scandinavian investors are pulling out of my brand launch because of the federal embezzlement flag on my corporate tax ID! Ethan, answer your phone!”
“Why is your wife’s lawyer threatening to seize my apartment in Copenhagen?! Fix this right now!”
Ethan slowly scrolled through the messages, a cold, hollow numbness settling deep into his chest.
The woman he had abandoned his bride for—the ethereal, artistic muse he had convinced himself was his true destiny—wasn't worried about his heartbreak or his ruined reputation. She was panicking because her free ride had just been abruptly cut off by a woman who refused to be played for a fool.
He dialed Rachel’s number with trembling fingers, hoping against hope for a shred of comfort.
The call went straight to voicemail.
He tried her cell again. “The subscriber you have dialed is currently unavailable or has blocked incoming calls from this number.”
He dropped the phone onto the hardwood floor. It clattered loudly, the screen cracking against the baseboard.

For the first time in his charmed, arrogant life, Ethan Mercer realized the terrifying price of his own selfishness. He had possessed everything—a brilliant, fiercely loyal wife who loved him unconditionally, a multi-million-dollar empire, and a secure, respected place at the top of society.
And he had traded it all for a cup of airport coffee and a ghost from his past.
