Chapter 3 - The Ghost from Our Past

My hands trembled so violently I could barely unfold the heavy parchment paper inside the box. The handwriting was unmistakable—neat, precise, and completely agonizing to look at. It was Chris’s handwriting.

Evelyn, the letter began.

If you are reading this, it means you finally made it to the ocean. By now, you probably believe I left you because I was a coward who couldn't bear the hospital walls. You needed to believe that to stay strong for Lily and Ben. But the truth is something I was forced to carry alone.

Tears blurred my vision, hot and blinding. I stumbled backward, gripping the edge of the hotel desk for support. "No," I choked out, shaking my head. "No, this is a sick joke. He walked out. He never called. He abandoned us!"

Arthur placed a comforting hand on my shoulder, steadying me. "Keep reading, Mrs. Miller. The rest of the story is inside that box."

I forced my eyes back onto the paper, my breath hitching in my throat.

The night after Lily’s diagnosis, I received a call from a private medical investigator I had secretly hired. I learned that the experimental immunotherapy trial capable of curing their specific genetic mutation was only available through a specialized clinic in Switzerland. The cost was astronomical—half a million dollars upfront. When I begged our insurance company, they denied coverage, calling it experimental and terminal.

If I stayed with you in Chicago, my salary as an architect would barely cover monthly rent, let alone a half-million-dollar European trial. If I stayed, we would lose everything, and the hospital would run out of options for our babies. So, I made a deal with the devil. I took a high-risk corporate espionage contract overseas—a brutal, high-security project for a tech conglomerate in Zurich that required me to completely cut off all communication with you. No calls, no texts, no digital footprint, or the contract would be voided, and the funding would be pulled instantly.

Every single dollar in this box represents the completion of that contract. It is enough to pay for the Swiss clinic, private transport, and complete medical recovery for Lily and Ben. I didn't run away from my family, Evelyn. I ran into the fire to save them.

I dropped the letter, letting out a sob that tore straight from the deepest, most wounded part of my soul. All those months of agonizing loneliness, of crying myself to sleep while holding my sick children, of cursing a man I thought had abandoned us in our darkest hour—it had all been a sacrifice. A monstrous, silent sacrifice.
