Chapter 4 - The Gala at the Moretti Estate

The Moretti estate looked less like a home and more like a fortress disguised as a nineteenth-century European castle. Perched high on a jagged cliff overlooking the crashing waves of Boston Harbor, the massive stone mansion blazed with light from hundreds of crystal chandeliers. Valet parking attendants in crisp black uniforms scrambled to park imported sports cars and vintage luxury sedans, while paparazzi milled behind heavy security gates, snapping photos of wealthy socialites stepping out onto the red carpet. Meline pulled her modest sedan up to the gate, her hands steady on the steering wheel. When the security guard approached her window, expecting a chauffeur or a guest in designer evening wear, she simply held up her black leather portfolio and her custom designer pass.

“Meline Hayes,” she said calmly. “Hayes Bespoke. I’m here on urgent wardrobe business for the groom.” The guard took one look at her sharp, unyielding gaze and the professional badge clipped to her lapel, nodded, and swung the heavy iron gates open. She parked near the service entrance, refusing to let the valet touch her car, and walked through the side doors into the belly of the estate. The interior was a labyrinth of marble hallways, priceless oil paintings, and whispering servants carrying trays of champagne. Meline ignored them all, navigating her way toward the grand ballroom where the string quartet played softly beneath a vaulted ceiling. As she approached the arched double doors leading into the main hall, the sound of laughter and polite applause washed over her.

She took a deep breath, adjusted the lapel of her tailored suit, and pushed the doors open. The room was breathtaking. Hundreds of Boston’s elite mingled beneath glittering chandeliers, women in glittering designer gowns sipping champagne while powerful men in bespoke tuxedos negotiated business deals disguised as pleasantries. Standing near the center of the room, looking every bit the untouchable mafia prince, was Lorenzo Moretti. He wore a midnight-blue tuxedo that fit him with absolute perfection—a suit Meline herself had stayed up until dawn finishing three nights ago. Standing right beside him, draped in diamonds and white silk, was Isabella Romano. Isabella was stunning, with long blonde hair, porcelain skin, and a bright, practiced smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. She was laughing at something Lorenzo said, resting a manicured hand casually on his arm.

Meline felt a familiar, sharp pang in her chest, but she stamped it down immediately. She wasn't here to feel sorry for herself. She was here to finish a conversation. As if sensing her presence through the wall of bodies, Lorenzo’s head suddenly snapped toward the doorway. His dark eyes locked onto Meline across the crowded room. The smile vanished from his face instantly. The easy, polished charm he had been projecting melted away, replaced by a flash of raw, unfiltered shock—and something else. Fear. For a fraction of a second, Lorenzo looked genuinely terrified. Before Isabella could notice his abrupt change in demeanor, Lorenzo gently but firmly unhooked her hand from his arm. “Excuse me for a moment, darling,” he murmured to Isabella, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet space. “There is someone I need to see.”

He didn't wait for her reply. He began walking straight toward Meline, parting the sea of wealthy socialites like a ship cutting through water. Meline didn’t flinch. She stood tall, her hands resting calmly at her sides, her chin lifted high. When Lorenzo reached her, stopping just inches away, his breathing was slightly elevated. His dark eyes searched her face with desperate intensity. “Meline,” he breathed, his voice dangerously low. “What are you doing here? I told you not to come.” “You didn’t tell me anything,” Meline replied, her voice cutting through the ambient noise of the ballroom like a razor. “You left an invitation on my chair with a demand. But you forgot one crucial detail, Lorenzo. I don’t take orders from men who hide behind expensive fabric.” Before he could answer, a sharp, cold voice interrupted them from behind. “Lorenzo, darling. Is everything alright?”

Isabella Romano glided over, her diamond necklace flashing brilliantly under the chandelier light. She looked Meline up and down with a slow, dismissive sweep of her blue eyes, taking in the simple black pantsuit, the sensible shoes, and the absence of high-end jewelry. A condescending smile touched Isabella’s lips. “And who is this? One of the caterers? Really, darling, the staff entrance is around the back.” Meline didn't flinch. She turned her gaze slowly from Lorenzo to Isabella, a cool, glacial smile spreading across her own face. “I’m not a caterer, Ms. Romano,” Meline said smoothly, stepping forward into the light. “I’m the woman who tailored the suit your fiancé is currently wearing. And judging by the tension in his shoulders, I’d say it’s about time for another fitting. He tends to get rigid when he’s trapped in a corner.” Isabella’s smile faltered, her eyes narrowing as she looked between Meline and Lorenzo. “What is the meaning of this?” Lorenzo didn’t look at Isabella. His eyes remained locked on Meline, a slow, dangerous awareness dawning in his dark gaze. But before anyone else could speak, the heavy oak doors at the front of the ballroom flew open with a deafening crash.
