Chapter 4 - The Takeover

The dining room erupted into absolute pandemonium.
Several senior board members jumped to their feet, shouting objections, while others stared in stunned silence, realizing the staggering legal genius—and absolute ruthlessness—of the patriarch's maneuver. By transferring the entirety of the empire to Mariana, Arthur had not only saved Sterling Capital from federal seizure due to Rodrigo's illegal shell companies, but he had placed the entire conglomerate into the hands of the one person with the integrity, intelligence, and moral compass to save it.
"This is insane!" shouted Gerald Vance, a senior vice president and distant cousin of the family. "You can't just hand a multi-billion-dollar corporation to an outsider! She has no background in high finance! She's an artist!"
Arthur turned his piercing gray gaze toward Gerald, silencing him with a single look. "An artist who single-handedly managed our family's affairs, who audited our subsidiary spending reports out of pure curiosity two years ago and quietly warned me about minor discrepancies I ignored, and who possesses more integrity in her little finger than this entire board combined. If anyone here has an objection to my granddaughter-in-law taking the helm, you may submit your resignation to Marcus Vance before midnight."
Not a single person spoke. Gerald sank slowly back into his chair, wiping sweat from his forehead.
Rodrigo was trembling violently, his entire world crumbling into dust around him. All his arrogance, all his condescension, all his secret embezzlement—it had all led to this single moment of total annihilation. He looked at Mariana, the woman he had cheated on, mocked, and invited his mistress to humiliate. She didn't look angry anymore. She looked like a queen surveying a newly conquered kingdom.
"Mariana..." Rodrigo whispered, his voice cracking as he crawled a few inches toward her polished leather shoes. "Please... we've been married for three years. We can fix this. You love me. You know you do. Don't let your anger destroy us."
Mariana looked down at the man who had stood by while another woman struck her across the face. She didn't raise her voice. She didn't curse him. She simply looked at him the way an artist looks at a failed, hopelessly ruined sketch before tossing it into the fire.
"Rodrigo," Mariana said, her voice calm, clear, and utterly devoid of emotion. "Three hours ago, you told me not to cause a scene. You were right. Scenes are messy and unnecessary."
She turned her gaze to Marcus Vance, the family attorney. "Marcus, please ensure that Mr. Rodrigo Sterling is escorted off the property immediately. Furthermore, initiate the formal divorce proceedings first thing tomorrow morning. I want sole custody of every asset, complete dissolution of any shared liabilities, and a restraining order preventing him from coming within five hundred yards of any Sterling property."
"Right away, Madam Chair," Marcus said, offering Mariana a crisp, respectful bow of his head.
Two security guards stepped forward, grabbing Rodrigo by his expensive, charcoal-suited shoulders and hauling him upright. Rodrigo thrashed and wept, screaming curses and desperate pleas as they dragged him backward through the grand oak doors, casting him out into the cold Berkshire night from the very empire he had tried to steal.
Teresa Sterling sat motionless at the end of the long table, staring blankly at her empty wine glass, utterly defeated by the collapse of the dynasty she had spent a lifetime pretending to control.
Arthur placed a gentle, reassuring hand over Mariana's fingers, which still rested on the gold-embossed portfolio.
"The board is yours, Madam Chair," Arthur said softly. "The future of the Sterling name is in your hands now. What is your first official order of business?"

Mariana looked around the massive, silent room, taking in the frightened faces of the board members, the quiet dignity of the estate, and the open doors leading out into the starry night. The stinging red mark on her cheek still throbbed slightly, a permanent reminder of where she had been—and how far she had risen.
"My first order of business," Mariana said, her voice ringing clear and strong through the hall, "is to clear out every single corrupt executive who ever looked down on hard work and loyalty. And then... we rebuild from the ground up."
