Chapter 4 - THE MEETING HE NEVER SAW

The board of Mercer-Hale Technologies was gathered in an emergency conference room three blocks away.
Alexander’s former attorney sat beside federal investigators, company auditors and two detectives assigned to reopen the fatal crash.
They had heard Julian’s entire confession.
Elena had not been alone at any point during the confrontation.
Julian grabbed his phone. Twelve missed calls filled the screen—most from Daniel.
He called back.
Daniel answered immediately.
“You idiot,” Daniel shouted through the speaker. “The board froze every account. Federal agents are downstairs.”
Julian ended the call.
His anger transformed into raw fear.
“You set me up.”
Elena shook her head. “I showed you evidence. You decided what to say.”
“You’re my wife.”
“You stopped treating me like your wife when you used my father’s funeral to take his company.”
The elevator chimed beyond the foyer.
Julian moved toward the service hallway.
Elena stepped into his path.
“You won’t reach the private garage.”
“Move.”
“No.”
He stared at her, perhaps expecting the frightened woman who had spent six months accepting his explanations.
She did not lower her eyes.
Julian changed his tone.
“Elena, listen to me. Daniel planned the sabotage. He had gambling debts and needed the offshore money. I was trying to keep the company alive.”
“You forged my signature.”
“To protect your shares.”
“You backdated the transfer.”
“To stop Daniel from taking control.”
“You fired Marcus and deleted the cameras.”
“I panicked.”
“And you watched me bury my father while you knew why he died.”
Julian’s face tightened.
“I stayed beside you.”
“You stayed close enough to control what I learned.”
The elevator doors opened.
Two federal agents entered with Alexander’s attorney and the company’s head of security.
Julian looked toward the windows, but the penthouse was forty-eight floors above the street.
There was nowhere left to go.
One agent instructed him to place his phone and the leather folder on the counter.
As Julian complied, another call appeared on his screen.
DANIEL CROSS.
The agent answered and activated the speaker.
Daniel’s frantic voice filled the room.
“You said Elena would sign. You said the garage footage was gone.”
Julian closed his eyes.
The agent asked Daniel to identify himself.
The call ended immediately.
But the damage was done.
Alexander’s attorney opened the folder and examined the transfer agreement.
“This is not merely forged,” he said. “It activates the founder’s fraud clause.”
Julian looked up.
Alexander had added a protection provision to Elena’s inheritance years earlier. Any spouse or executive who attempted to obtain her voting rights through coercion, forgery or concealment would automatically lose all financial interests connected to the company.
Julian’s shares, executive compensation and authority had been suspended the moment Elena submitted the altered documents to the board.
The company he had tried to steal no longer belonged to him in any form.
“You can’t remove me without a vote,” he said.
May you like
Elena closed the laptop.
“They voted while you were talking.”
