Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Network

The morning sun filtered pale and cold through the tall Gothic windows of the Cross estate’s administrative wing, but inside Vincent’s private office, the atmosphere remained shrouded in perpetual shadow. Heavy mahogany bookshelves lined the walls, filled with ledgers detailing shipping routes, dock acquisitions, and financial portfolios that spanned three continents.

Fay sat stiffly on the edge of a leather armchair near the fireplace, a cup of steaming black coffee resting untouched on the mahogany table before her. The bruising on her face had turned a deeper, mottled shade of indigo overnight, impossible to hide even with heavy theatrical concealer. Across from her sat Vincent, flanked by his fiercely loyal right-hand man and consigliere, Marcus Vance.

Marcus adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, sliding a thick manila folder across the polished desk. His expression was a mask of professional neutrality, though his sharp eyes glanced sideways at Fay with a flicker of grim curiosity.

"The security logs from the eastern corridor have been pulled, Boss," Marcus reported, his voice crisp and steady. "The internal audio and visual feeds confirm Miss Miller’s account. At 10:05 p.m., Capo Donovan intercepted her near the billiards room. The physical altercation lasted approximately forty-two seconds before Donovan departed toward the south guest wing."

Vincent didn't look at the folder. His gaze remained locked on Fay, sitting motionless in the leather chair. He had spent the last three hours tearing apart the estate's internal hierarchy, reviewing every financial ledger associated with Donovan’s dock operations, and systematically dismantling the capo’s sphere of influence before the man had even woken up from his alcoholic stupor.

"Where is Donovan now?" Vincent asked, his voice deceptively calm.

"Sleeping off his hangover in suite 4B," Marcus replied, checking a silver pocket watch. "He’s scheduled to meet with the port authorities at noon to oversee the new container shipment from Marseille."

Vincent stood up, smoothing the cuffs of his shirt with slow, deliberate precision. He walked slowly around the mahogany desk until he stood directly in front of Fay. The sheer physical presence of the syndicate boss made the room feel suddenly smaller, suffocatingly intimate.

"Fay," Vincent said quietly, his voice softening just enough to bypass her defenses. "You told me last night that you stayed silent because you were afraid of losing your paycheck. You were protecting your mother's medical treatments."

Fay looked up, her heart skipping a beat. "How did you—"

"I own this city, Miss Miller. Nothing happens within my properties or among my employees that stays hidden for long," Vincent interrupted smoothly. "When I ran background checks on my staff, your file caught my attention. A dedicated daughter working three jobs, paying out-of-pocket for experimental oncology at St. Jude’s Hospital, yet never asking for an advance, never complaining, and never breaking protocol."

He crouched down slightly so his eyes were level with hers, mirroring the exact posture he had taken on the cold kitchen floor hours earlier.

"You believed that if you reported Donovan, I would cast you out to protect the syndicate's bottom line," Vincent continued, his dark eyes piercing straight through her armor. "You thought criminals only protect criminals."

"In my experience, sir, power protects power," Fay whispered honestly, her voice trembling slightly under the weight of his gaze. "A maid is replaceable. A capo who moves millions in product through the docks is not."

A dark, humorless smile touched the corners of Vincent’s mouth. He straightened up, turning back to Marcus with a look that sent a shiver down the spine of anyone who understood the Cross family history.

"Disabuse him of that notion," Vincent ordered coldly. "Strip Donovan of his rank, freeze his offshore accounts, and escort him to the main courtyard. Let the rest of the capos know that a new rule has been established in this house. Anyone who touches what is mine answers directly to me."

Marcus nodded once, a grim smile touching his lips. "Consider it done, Boss."

Fay sat frozen in her chair, staring at the mafia boss in stunned disbelief. He wasn't just firing Donovan; he was dismantling him entirely, publicly executing a power shift to send a message to the entire underworld. And in the center of the storm, Vincent turned back to her, offering a proposition that would change her life forever.
