Chapter 4 - The Aftermath and the Audit

Three days later, the hospital room was completely empty, stripped of its sterile medical equipment and waiting for the next occupant. Victor Vance had passed away quietly just hours after his dramatic collapse, his final moments spent drowning in the suffocating realization that his secret empire had just become his legal wife's sole inheritance.
The funeral was a quiet, muted affair. Ethan stood beside me in a sharp black suit, holding my arm with quiet, steadfast support. He still didn't know every single gruesome detail of his father's betrayal, but he knew enough to understand that the woman who had hovered around our periphery for years was nothing more than a ghost at the feast. Melissa and her son did not attend the service; my attorneys had sent a preliminary notice of asset freeze and forensic audit to her legal representation less than twenty-four hours after Victor’s heart stopped.
Sitting in the glass-walled conference room of downtown Seattle's most ruthless family law and estate litigation firm, I watched as my lead attorney, Sarah Jenkins, slid a thick stack of certified documents across the polished mahogany table.
"It's a complete legal sweep, Elena," Sarah said, a look of profound professional admiration in her eyes. "Because Victor signed those transfer documents on his deathbed while of sound enough mind to execute a binding legal trust, he legally ratified every single asset listed inside them as part of the broader marital estate ledger. Our forensic accountants have already cross-referenced your thirteen-year archive with the county deeds. Every single property, vehicle, and commercial account he tried to funnel to Melissa has been formally flagged and frozen under emergency injunction."
I picked up my pen, turning it slowly between my fingers. "And Melissa?"
"She's finished," Sarah replied smoothly, opening another folder. "Without Victor’s ongoing financial subsidization, the commercial plaza she thought she owned is currently encumbered by federal tax liens and emergency marital claims. Furthermore, because those assets were purchased using community funds diverted from your shared business ventures during an active marriage, California and Washington case law dictate that she has zero legal standing to retain them. She’s facing mandatory clawback litigation. Every dime she received over the last thirteen years is going to be audited, tracked, and clawed back into the estate."
I let out a long, slow breath, feeling a weight I hadn't fully realized I was carrying finally lift from my shoulders. For thirteen years, I had lived in a state of quiet, hyper-vigilant suspension. I had played the dutiful wife while acting as my own private investigator, archiving every betrayal, filing away every receipt, and building a titanium fortress of documentation.

Victor had thought he was the architect of his own destiny. He thought he could outsmart time, law, and morality. But in the end, his own arrogance had been his undoing. He had built a magnificent trap for me, only to walk right into it himself and pull the trigger.
"Proceed with the full asset reclamation," I instructed calmly, closing the file folder. "And make sure Melissa receives every single court filing first thing tomorrow morning."
