Chapter 4 - The Corporate Takeover

Patricia’s face mottled into an ugly shade of crimson. She opened her mouth to unleash a torrent of insults, but before she could speak, the glass doors behind her swung open, and Daniel stumbled out of the executive suite.

He looked like a man who had aged ten years in a single night. His hair was disheveled, his tie was loosened, and his tailored suit jacket was draped over his arm as if he had been physically thrown out of his own office.

When his eyes locked onto mine standing in the lobby, he froze. All the arrogant fury that had defined him at dinner the night before was completely gone, replaced by a hollow, trembling despair.

“Claire,” he breathed, taking a stumbling step toward me. “Please. Tell me this is a joke. Tell me you didn't... my partners are threatening to sue me for fraud. They found out Mercer Holdings is leveraged against Hartwell Capital. They want my resignation by noon.”

I didn't move an inch. I kept my hands folded neatly in front of me, my posture upright and unyielding.

“Your partners are finally realizing they hitched their wagon to a fraud, Daniel,” I said, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet, echoing marble lobby. “You spent eight years telling me I was lucky you paid for everything, while every single commission, every bonus, and every property you ever bragged about was propped up by the very credit line my family’s firm controlled.”

Daniel staggered forward, dropping his jacket onto the floor. “You owned it all along... the whole time?”

“I owned the underlying notes, yes,” I replied calmly. “And as of 9:00 AM this morning, Hartwell Capital has officially exercised its default clause. Mercer & Vance Commercial Group is now under receivership management.”

Patricia gasped, clapping a jeweled hand over her chest as if she were about to faint right there on the marble floor. “You can’t do that! We are Highland Park royalty! We built this firm!”

“You built nothing,” a new voice echoed from the elevator.

Marcus Vance, Daniel’s senior business partner and the co-founder of the firm, stepped out into the lobby carrying a cardboard box filled with personal desk items. His face was set in a mask of cold, unforgiving fury as he glared directly at Daniel.

“Is this true, Mercer?” Marcus demanded, his voice shaking with rage. “You leveraged our entire commercial portfolio against a private holding firm without disclosing the master lienholder? You lied to every single partner in this building to fund your lavish lifestyle!”

Daniel turned pale, stammering frantically. “Marcus, wait, I can explain—it was just a temporary arrangement—!”

“You’re finished,” Marcus snapped, walking past him without a second glance. He stopped for a fraction of a second as he passed me, offering a respectful, tight-lipped nod before heading out the revolving glass doors into the Dallas rain.

Daniel stood alone in the center of the lobby, completely deserted by his business partners, his mother staring at him in horrified disbelief, and the woman he had tried to discard standing before him as his ultimate executioner.
