Chapter 5 - The Sweetest Revenge

Three months later, the headlines in the New York Post and the financial sections of the Wall Street Journal had finally stopped buzzing about the society wedding of the decade.

Julian Sterling’s empire had taken a catastrophic hit. True to his word, Noah had quietly unleashed a torrent of forensic financial audits on the Sterling real estate trust, exposing years of illegal shell companies and tax evasion that Julian’s father had swept under the rug. Within weeks, federal investigators raided Julian’s offices, and his elite friends suddenly forgot his phone number. He was currently facing federal indictment and social exile, hiding out in a dingy apartment while liquidating his assets to pay off mounting legal fees.

Evelyn didn't care about any of it.

She stood on the wrap-around balcony of a secluded cliffside villa in Amalfi, Italy, the warm Mediterranean breeze tangling her chestnut hair. Down below, the turquoise waves crashed gently against the rocky shore, and the scent of lemon groves drifted up from the valley.

Footsteps approached softly from behind. Strong arms wrapped around her waist, and a familiar chin rested gently on her shoulder.

“You’ve been staring at the water for twenty minutes,” Noah murmured, his voice rich and low against her ear. “Are you regretting letting me drag you halfway across the world for a three-month honeymoon?”

Evelyn leaned back into his chest, smiling as she placed her hands over his arms. On her left ring finger, a custom-designed diamond ring caught the golden Italian sunlight, flashing brilliantly with every movement. It wasn't a prop for a drone show or a trophy to win a bet; it was a symbol of a partnership built on mutual respect, fierce loyalty, and absolute truth.

“I was just thinking about how ironic life is,” Evelyn said softly, turning around in his arms to face him.

“Oh yeah? How so?” Noah asked, raising an eyebrow as he looped his hands securely around her waist.

“Julian always told me I smelled like the morgue,” she said, her lips twitching into an amused smile. “He said I was too dark, too clinical, too macabre for his world.”

Noah’s expression darkened slightly at the mention of her ex-fiancé, his hands tightening protectively. “Julian was an idiot who couldn't recognize a brilliant woman if she hit him with a law book.”

“Maybe,” Evelyn conceded, sliding her arms up around his neck. “But he was right about one thing. I spent years surrounded by dead things, trying to bring them back to life. I just had the wrong patient.” She kissed him softly, pulling him close. “With you, I don't have to audition. I don't have to chase. I’m finally alive.”

Noah pulled her flush against him, deepening the kiss with a quiet, fierce intensity that made her pulse race just as wildly as it had on the day she asked him to marry her.

Back home, Julian was a ghost haunting the ruins of a social circle he had built on cruelty. But here, under the Italian sun, Evelyn Hart had buried the past where it belonged—and stepped into a future that was entirely, breathtakingly her own.
