Chapter 5 - A New Horizon

Six months later, the spring air of Manhattan was warm, vibrant, and filled with the crisp scent of blooming magnolias in Central Park.
Inside the newly renovated corner office on the top floor of what was now Vance-Blackwell Holdings (formerly Mercer Development), sunlight poured through towering arched windows, illuminating a sleek, modern workspace.
On a soft cashmere rug near the window, my four-month-old daughter, Maya, was kicking her tiny legs happily, chasing a silver rattle while wearing a soft white cotton dress.
I sat at the expansive mahogany executive desk—the very same desk where Nathan had once plotted his corporate deceptions. A fresh, elegant brass nameplate gleamed under the desk lamp:
Evelyn Vance-Blackwell, Chief Executive Officer.
(I had legally reclaimed my maiden name three months after the divorce decree was finalized, wiping every trace of Nathan’s corrupted legacy from my identity.)
The corporate restructuring had been an unprecedented success. Under my leadership, Vance-Blackwell Holdings had transitioned from a predatory real-estate conglomerate into an ethical, sustainable urban development firm dedicated to affordable housing and community restoration. Our profit margins were twenty-five percent higher than they had ever been under Nathan’s erratic, ego-driven management.
As for Nathan? He was currently residing in a federal correctional facility in upstate New York, sharing a cell block with white-collar criminals who no longer cared about his designer suits or his hollow boasts of billionaire status.
Madison Vale had vanished from New York society entirely, her reputation destroyed, her social media accounts deleted, and her Tribeca luxury loft seized by federal marshals to help pay back the victims of Nathan’s corporate embezzlement.
The heavy mahogany door of my office clicked open softly.
Graham Blackwell stepped inside, carrying a stack of architectural blueprints in one hand and a plush stuffed bunny for Maya in the other. He crouched down on the rug, letting Maya grab onto his finger with a delighted giggle.
"Afternoon, CEO," Graham smiled, looking up at me with warmth and adoration in his eyes. "The city council just approved our Brooklyn waterfront redevelopment proposal. Groundbreaking is scheduled for next Tuesday."
I stood up from my desk, walking over to the window and looking down at the bustling, unstoppable energy of Fifth Avenue below.
Nathan Mercer had spent his entire life believing that love, loyalty, and power were assets to be manipulated, bought, and discarded when they became inconvenient. He thought he could build an empire on lies and betrayal.

He had simply forgotten that the person who knows where all the bodies are buried is usually the one holding the shovel.
I scooped Maya up into my arms, resting her head against my shoulder as Graham wrapped his arm securely around my waist. The past was burned to ash, our accounts were settled, and the future belonged entirely to us.
