Chapter 4 - The Confession Under the Moonlight

"Maya?" Terrence breathed, his eyes wide and unhinged. "What... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be recovering at home."

"And you're supposed to be mourning our lost memories, Terrence," I replied, my voice steady, cutting through the eerie silence of the ruins like a scalpel. "Instead of standing out on the lawn scrolling through your phone while the house burned down around us."

Terrence took a slow, calculated step forward, clicking the heavy metal flashlight in his hand. "You don't know what you're talking about. You're traumatized, Maya. The smoke—it's messing with your head. We lost everything. We need to go back to the hospital."

"Did we lose everything, Terrence?" I asked, taking a step closer, forcing him to look directly into my eyes. "Or did you gain four million dollars from an offshore shell corporation funded by a forged secondary mortgage on this very house?"

His breath hitched. The color completely vanished from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse in the moonlight. "What... what did you say?"

"I said Apex Solutions' Cayman accounts look fascinating," I continued, reciting the routing numbers and specific wire transfer codes from memory. "Four million, two hundred thousand dollars transferred forty-eight hours before the fire. Routed through three separate shell companies to obscure the trail. A masterpiece of corporate fraud. Except you made one fatal mistake, darling."

"Shut up," Terrence hissed, taking another threatening step forward, raising the metal flashlight. "You don't know anything. You never understood how big the world outside our little books really is."

"I forensic-audited your entire life, Terrence," I said, my voice rising clear and resonant, broadcasting straight into the cloud recorder linked to the federal prosecutor's office. "You thought burning this house down would destroy my physical paperwork, incinerate my tax archives, and leave me dead in the master bedroom so you could collect the insurance payout and skip the country with your corporate mistress."

Terrence lunged forward, his face contorted in pure, unadulterated rage. "You should have stayed in that bedroom! If you hadn't woken me up, none of this would have happened!"

There it was. The unscripted, absolute confession spoken out loud in the dead of night.

"I heard that loud and clear," a deep, authoritative voice boomed from the shadows of the driveway.

Suddenly, the darkness erupted into blinding white light as multiple police cruisers and federal unmarked vehicles surged into the property from all sides, their emergency strobe lights painting the charred walls in vivid flashes of red and blue. State troopers and federal agents swarmed the perimeter, cutting off every possible exit.

Terrence spun around in absolute panic, dropping the heavy metal flashlight as two federal agents tackled him hard against the charred brick of the chimney, snapping cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.
