Chapter 4 - The Legal Storm

The next morning, the storm broke with full force.

Vladimir had spent the entire night pacing the living room, alternating between furious threats, desperate denials, and pathetic, tearful apologies. He tried every trick in the book: he claimed Diana meant nothing to him, that the secret bank accounts were just an investment fund for our future, and that I was blowing a minor mistake completely out of proportion. I didn't yell back. I simply sat on the armchair with a cup of coffee, letting him exhaust himself until his voice cracked into a hoarse whisper.

When the sun finally rose, the doorbell rang.

Vladimir, looking haggard and exhausted with dark circles under his eyes, walked over and pulled the door open. Standing on the landing were two individuals: a court bailiff holding an official notification envelope and Irina, my attorney, wearing a sharp charcoal suit and a confident, professional smile.

“Good morning, Mr. Smirnov,” Irina greeted him smoothly, stepping past him into the hallway without waiting for an invitation. “I am Natalia’s legal counsel. I trust you received the preliminary emergency asset-freezing injunction sent to your digital banking portal an hour ago?”

Vladimir’s jaw dropped. He looked from Irina to me, his face turning an ash-gray color.

“An injunction?” he choked out, his voice shaking. “You… you filed court papers overnight? Natalia, are you insane? You’re destroying our marriage over a misunderstanding!”

“Our marriage ended the moment you decided to treat me like a disposable fool while funding your mistress,” I said coldly, walking over to the entryway and handing him a pre-packed suitcase I had prepared the night before. “The court has frozen your primary and secondary accounts, Vladimir. Your secret stash is locked down, and every single ruble you diverted from our shared marital assets is now subject to mandatory judicial audit and asset division.”

The bailiff stepped forward, handing him the official paperwork detailing the court orders. Vladimir clutched the stack of papers like a drowning man grasping at a sinking anchor, his hands trembling violently.

“You can’t do this!” he screamed, his voice cracking with panic as the reality of his professional and financial ruin began to sink in. “If my company gets dragged into a contentious financial litigation, my reputation is finished! My boss will fire me on the spot!”

“That sounds like a personal problem,” Irina replied smoothly, adjusting her briefcase strap. “Perhaps you should have thought about your career stability before committing financial fraud and marital abandonment. You have twenty-four hours to vacate this apartment, Mr. Smirnov. Any further communication must go exclusively through my office.”

With that, Irina turned and walked back toward the elevator, leaving Vladimir standing in the doorway of his own home, utterly shattered, holding a suitcase and a stack of legal notices that spelled out the total destruction of his double life.

He looked at me, his eyes pleading for mercy, but there was nothing left inside me to give.

“You can go live with the woman you’ve been spending our money on,” I said quietly, looking him dead in the eye. “You have no place here anymore.”

I closed the door right in his face, turning the deadbolt with a satisfying, permanent click.

The silence that followed wasn't suffocating like it had been days ago. It was clean, light, and full of infinite possibility. I walked back into the kitchen, poured myself a fresh cup of coffee, and smiled as I looked out the window at the bright morning sky. The nightmare was over, and my new life was finally beginning.
