Chapter 4 - The Confession Under Fire

Ethan froze, his hand still resting on my shoulder, his chest heaving as if he had just run a marathon. The color had completely drained from his face, leaving him looking older, harsher, and utterly exposed.

For a terrifying second, neither of us breathed. The heavy oak door to his study creaked open an inch behind him, and Brian’s silhouette appeared in the crack before he wisely stepped back into the shadows and clicked the door shut, leaving us entirely alone in the dark corridor.

"What are you doing here, Jane?" Ethan asked, his voice dropping into a raspy, defensive whisper.

I didn't cower. I looked straight up into those stormy gray eyes, letting all the pain, betrayal, and sudden, overwhelming realization bleed into my own expression.

"I heard everything," I said, my voice remarkably steady despite the adrenaline roaring in my ears. "I heard about the Russo family. I heard about the financial routing. And I heard how you used my signature as a shield without telling me."

Ethan closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, a look of profound defeat crossing his features. When he opened them again, the cold, untouchable mask of the syndicate boss was completely gone.

"I had to protect the distribution lines, Jane," he admitted, his voice rough and unyielding, yet laced with a strange, defensive urgency. "The Russos were going to crush my family from the inside out. Using those accounts was the only way to reroute the capital without triggering an all-out civil war in the streets. I didn't think they would trace it back to you so quickly."

"And using me as bait?" I stepped closer, poking a sharp finger against the solid wall of his chest. "Treating me like a prisoner in my own home while a crosshair was painted directly on my back? Did you think I’d just sit quietly in the east wing forever while men hunted me down?"

Ethan caught my wrist, his grip surprisingly gentle, pulling my hand flat against his chest so I could feel the violent, frantic rhythm of his heartbeat.

"I didn't trap you here to hurt you, Jane," he growled softly, leaning down until his face was only inches from mine. "I trapped you here because this mansion is the only place in Chicago where my private army can guarantee you are safe. Every guard, every locked door, every camera—it was all designed to keep you breathing while I hunted down every last Russo soldier who DARED look at you."

The fury in my chest suddenly collided with a profound, terrifying wave of realization. He hadn't kept me locked away because he was indifferent. He had locked me away because losing me had somehow become his greatest fear.

"You're an arrogant, manipulative bastard, Ethan Carter," I whispered, tears finally spilling over my lashes and tracking hot down my cheeks.

"I know," he murmured, his thumb gently reaching out to wipe away a tear from my cheek—a tender gesture I had dreamed of seeing for three months. "You have every right to hate me. Pack your bags tonight, and I’ll have Brian drive you out of the city to a safehouse in Canada. You can be free of me, Jane. I'll sign the annulment papers myself."

He stepped back, releasing my wrist as if letting go of me was tearing his soul apart. He turned his back to me, staring out the high arched window toward the dark Chicago skyline.

I didn't move. I stood my ground in the center of the hallway, letting his words hang heavy in the midnight air.

"No," I said quietly.

Ethan stiffened, slowly turning his head back to look at me in disbelief. "What did you just say?"

"I said no," I repeated, lifting my chin with a fierce, defiant spark in my eyes that matched his own. "You think you can just use my signature, drag me into your mob war, and then casually dismiss me when things get dangerous? If the Russo family wants to hunt me, they’re going to have to deal with both of us."

Ethan stared at me as if I had lost my mind, but a slow, breathtaking smile—the rare, genuine smile that transformed his entire face—finally broke through his stoic armor.

Before he could answer, the glass of the hallway window shattered inward in a shower of deadly shards, and the deafening crack of a sniper rifle echoed through the estate.
