Chapter 5 - The Skyline and the Crown

Three years later, the grand opening of the Rossi Cultural District dominated the front pages of architectural and financial magazines across Europe and the Americas.

The crown jewel of the project—a sweeping, multi-tiered pavilion of glass and steel that seemed to defy gravity—bore a single name etched proudly into the cornerstone: Isabela da Silva, Principal Architect.

I stood on the private balcony of my own architectural firm's headquarters in downtown Milan, watching the sunset paint the Duomo in shades of amber and rose. My phone buzzed on the glass table beside my espresso.

It was a notification from a disgraced corporate forum online. A public post from Rafael, now working a low-level administrative desk job in a provincial town outside São Paulo, complaining about how unfair life was, how his ex-girlfriend had stolen his thunder, how he was a victim of circumstance.

I didn't even bother to open it. I swiped the notification away, consigning him permanently to where he belonged: the trash heap of yesterday's irrelevant history.

Footsteps echoed softly behind me on the marble flooring. Strong, familiar hands settled gently onto my shoulders, pulling me backward into a warm, solid embrace.

“The city council is calling this our finest achievement,” Matteo murmured, resting his chin against my hair. “They are already asking about Phase Two.”

I leaned back against his chest, smiling as I looked out over the glittering Milan skyline—a skyline that I had helped shape, protect, and conquer.

“Let them wait,” I whispered, turning around in his arms to wrap my arms around his neck. “Tonight, the city belongs to us.”

Matteo’s dark eyes flashed with that familiar, intense fire, but this time, there was a profound tenderness beneath it. He pulled me close, sealing our victory with a kiss that tasted like the future—a future built entirely by my own hands, where no one would ever dare call me dead weight again.
