Chapter 5 - The Master Mechanic

The heavy rain was still drumming against the corrugated tin roof of Doyle & Sons Industrial Repair, a modest, sun-faded workshop tucked away on a quiet side street in Long Island City. Inside, the air smelled of WD-40, hot motor oil, and aged machine grease.
Cassie stood over a dismantled commercial compressor unit, a heavy wrench in her hand, wiping grease from her cheek with the back of her wrist. Life had resumed its heavy, grinding routine after her fateful night at Marino’s Table. She had stared at the heavy metal business card left on her table for three whole days, wondering if it was some kind of elaborate joke, or if the wealthy, intimidating man who had tipped her four hundred dollars was just another Manhattan ghost.
Suddenly, the heavy metal rolling door of the workshop groaned open.
A sleek, matte-black armored Mercedes SUV—a vehicle that clearly cost more than the entire block of warehouses combined—pulled smoothly into the dry interior of the garage, its headlights cutting through the dim, dusty air.
Cassie froze, dropping her wrench onto the workbench with a sharp clatter.
The driver's side door opened.
Out stepped Thiago Bellacort.
He wasn't wearing his faded flannel shirt or scuffed work boots today. He wore a tailored charcoal-gray Italian suit that accentuated his broad shoulders and commanding height, his platinum-white hair impeccably styled, his square jaw cleanly shaven. He looked every bit the ruthless, untouchable billionaire industrialist he actually was.
Yet, as his dark eyes locked onto Cassie standing beside her machine, the cold corporate armor vanished completely, replaced by a warm, disarming smile.
"You..." Cassie breathed out, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird as she wiped her greasy hands frantically on her denim jeans. "You’re... you’re the CEO of Bellacort Medical? You lied to me?"
"I was running an experiment, Cassie," Thiago said, his deep voice echoing softly through the quiet garage as he closed the distance between them. "I wanted to see who would care about a man who had nothing. And instead, I found the only person in New York who showed genuine kindness to a stranger drowning in his own misery."
Cassie stepped back, crossing her arms defensively, though her cheeks were burning red. "So what? You came here to play the savior? To buy my gratitude with a fancy suit and a corporate title?"
Thiago stopped two feet away from her. He didn't look offended; if anything, his respect for her only deepened.
"I didn't come here to buy anything," Thiago said softly. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a single, official document bearing the official seal of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, holding it out toward her.
Cassie looked down at the paper, her breath catching in her throat.
Account Balance: $0.00. Paid in full via Anonymous Medical Grant.
Her eyes snapped back up to his, wide with absolute disbelief, tears suddenly pricking the corners of her blue-gray eyes. "You... what did you do?"
"Your father’s debt is gone, Cassie," Thiago said, his voice dropping to a low, intimate register. "You spent three years sacrificing your dreams, your career, and your youth to keep your family afloat. It’s time someone took care of you for a change."
Cassie stared at him, the walls around her heart finally crumbling completely. The cynicism and exhaustion of years of struggle melted away, replaced by an overwhelming wave of relief and raw, undeniable emotion.
Before she could form words, Thiago reached into his pocket once more. This time, he didn't pull out a business card or cash. He pulled out a small, velvet-lined leather box, opened it slowly, and revealed a breathtaking, flawless diamond ring that caught the garage light like a captured star.
"I tested the world and found it empty," Thiago whispered, taking her grease-stained hand gently in his large, warm palm. "Then a plus-size waitress at a modest Italian restaurant handed me a towel when I was drowning in my own pride, and made a billionaire forget every rule he ever lived by."
He looked deep into her eyes, his gaze steady, fierce, and completely devoted.
"Marry me, Cassie. Let me spend the rest of my life proving to you that you’ll never have to carry the weight of the world alone again."
Cassie looked down at the ring, then up at the powerful, terrifyingly handsome man who had traded his empire just to see if she would love him at his worst. A brilliant, radiant smile broke across her face, eclipsing all the fatigue and hardship of the past.

"Only if," Cassie teased, her voice thick with happy tears as she squeezed his hand, "you let me fix the cooling compressor on your Mercedes when it breaks down."
Thiago laughed—a deep, resonant sound that filled the dusty workshop with life—and pulled her into his arms, sealing his promise with a kiss that made every billionaire fortune in the world pale in comparison.
