Chapter 5 - A New Beginning

The legal dismantling of Derek Calloway’s empire wasn't just swift; it was absolute, surgical, and utterly devastating.

True to his word, Robert Mercer hadn't come to the house just as an angry father; he had arrived armed with decades of investigative expertise and a network of powerful professional contacts across the state of Tennessee. Within forty-eight hours of the incident, Robert’s former colleagues in financial crimes had secured emergency freezing orders on all of Derek’s corporate and personal accounts after uncovering a massive trail of corporate embezzlement, fraudulent asset concealment, and illegal tax evasion linked directly to the downtown redevelopment project.

Courtney Lane, realizing the ship was sinking faster than she could swim, vanished from Nashville within three days, taking none of Derek's money with her and immediately cutting all ties to his crumbling business ventures.

When Derek attempted to threaten legal action for assault and property damage, he discovered that his high-priced corporate defense attorneys had suddenly dropped his representation, citing "irreconcilable ethical conflicts." In reality, Robert had casually handed the firm's senior partners a thick dossier containing documented proof of Derek’s illegal financial maneuvers and domestic abuse patterns—making it clear that defending Calloway would mean immediate disbarment and federal investigation.

Two weeks after the incident, the master bedroom of the suburban estate was completely quiet.

Derek was gone—forced out of the property by a strict emergency restraining order while awaiting trial on domestic battery and financial fraud charges. The house itself was already listed for rapid liquidation under a court-appointed receiver to satisfy emergency alimony and child support liens secured aggressively by Hannah’s legal team, funded entirely by Robert.

Hannah sat comfortably in a plush armchair in the sunlit living room of her father’s cozy, unassuming home in Franklin. The smell of fresh coffee and cinnamon drifted from the kitchen, where Robert was attempting—and mostly failing—to flip another batch of his famously terrible Sunday pancakes.

She looked down at her swollen stomach, watching as another small, energetic kick pressed firmly against the cotton fabric of her sweater. This time, there was no fear in her chest—only a profound, unshakeable peace.

The front door opened softly, and Robert walked into the living room holding a steaming mug of coffee and a thick legal folder, his gray hair catching the bright afternoon light.

"How are we feeling today, kiddo?" Robert asked gently, handing her the mug before taking a seat in the matching armchair across from her.

Hannah took a warm sip, smiling up at her father with eyes full of a love and gratitude she had forgotten how to express. "We’re feeling wonderful, Dad. Really wonderful."

Robert nodded, a quiet, satisfied smile touching the corners of his mouth as he tapped the corner of the legal folder. "Good. Because the final asset transfer went through this morning. The commercial properties are officially in your name, held in a secure trust for the baby. Derek doesn't have a dime left to his name, and his corporate partners are cooperating fully with the federal prosecutor."

Hannah looked out the wide bay window toward the quiet backyard where the old wooden fishing boat sat waiting for its next coat of paint. The dark, suffocating chapter of her life was completely closed, buried beneath the unwavering strength of a father who had never stopped watching over her.

"Thank you, Dad," she whispered softly.

Robert reached across the small table, covering her hand with his warm, calloused palm. "Always, sweetheart. That’s what family is for. Now, do you think you can help me fix these pancakes before they turn into charcoal?"

For the first time in years, Hannah threw her head back and laughed—a bright, genuine sound that filled the entire house with the promise of a brand-new beginning.
