Chapter 3 - Unearthing the Rot

The sterile smell of antiseptic and fresh coffee hung heavily in the private hospital recovery room as the morning sun finally broke through the heavy grey clouds outside. Emily was resting peacefully, her nose splinted and resting beneath a light bandage, her breathing even and steady. The hospital staff had placed her under 24-hour security detail at my direct request, ensuring no one—not even our mother—could walk into her room unannounced.

I sat in a stiff vinyl armchair beside her bed, my laptop open across my knees, a cup of black coffee cooling on the bedside table.

My phone buzzed aggressively. I picked it up immediately. It was Marcus, my lead tech analyst from the state attorney general’s financial crimes unit, whom I had called in at 3:00 AM to run a preliminary forensic sweep on Richard’s personal and business accounts.

“Claire,” Marcus’s voice crackled through the encrypted line, serious and sharp. “You’re not going to believe what we just pulled from Richard’s primary laptop server.”

“Try me, Marcus. I’ve seen it all.”

“Have you? Because Richard wasn't just trying to get control of Emily’s $1.8 million trust fund through a forged power of attorney. That was his backup plan. His primary plan was already halfway executed.”

My blood ran cold. I leaned forward, my eyes fixed on the blank hospital wall. “Explain.”

“Three years ago, right after your father passed away, Richard set up a complex web of shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands under fictitious guardian identities,” Marcus explained rapidly, typing keys clacking in the background. “He systematically drained $450,000 in monthly interest disbursements directly out of Emily’s protected trust account, funneling the cash into local real estate developments and high-risk speculative crypto ventures under his own brother’s name.”

I let out a harsh, bitter breath. Half a million dollars. He had been quietly bleeding Emily dry while playing the humble, struggling stepfather who needed financial help to pay for household groceries.

“Is the paper trail clean enough for a federal freeze?” I asked, my voice dropping an octave into pure, controlled ice.

“It’s airtight,” Marcus confirmed. “Every single wire transfer traces directly back to Richard’s personal IP address and his verified biometric banking signature. Not only did he commit felony assault last night, but he’s also looking at twenty counts of federal wire fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny. If we file the emergency asset-freezing injunctions by noon today, the state will seize every single property, vehicle, and bank account he owns before his defense attorney can even file a motion for bail.”

“Do it,” I ordered. “File the injunctions immediately. I want his personal accounts frozen, his credit cards locked, and every vehicle he owns impounded by sunset. Let him see what it feels like to have absolutely nothing.”

“Will do, boss. I’ll have the digital evidence package on the judge’s desk within the hour.”

I hung up the phone and set it down on the table. I looked over at Emily, who was stirring slightly in her sleep, her brow furrowing as if she were having a bad dream. I gently reached out, taking her warm, fragile hand in mine, rubbing my thumb softly over her knuckles.

“You’re safe now, Em,” I whispered to the empty room. “I promise you, he’s never going to touch you again. And every single cent he stole from you is coming right back where it belongs.”

An hour later, I left Emily in the care of a trusted private nurse and drove straight to the county courthouse. The air outside was crisp and clean after the storm, washing away the grime of the previous night. But my mind was already racing ahead to the courtroom battle that awaited us. Richard thought he could hide behind closed doors, silence a disabled girl, and bully his way into a fortune. He didn't know that my team and I were going to tear his entire world down to the studs, exposing every dirty secret he had tried to bury in the dark.
