Chapter 2 - THE FILE BEHIND THE WALL
Twelve hours earlier, Claire had awakened on the bathroom floor of the Mercer house with bloodless pain spreading across her face and Evan pounding on the locked door.
He had demanded the unsigned voting agreement.
Claire had told him it was still in her mother’s old desk at Vale Medical. That lie bought her enough time to climb through the bathroom window, cross the wet lawn barefoot and reach the neighboring house.
By the time Harrison arrived, Evan had already called him.
“She’s having another episode,” Evan had said. “She attacked me and ran away.”
For years, Harrison had accepted explanations like that. Claire missed family dinners because she was “overwhelmed.” She wore long sleeves because she was “always cold.” She stopped answering calls because marriage had made her “private.”
Harrison had wanted to believe his daughter was safe.
Seeing her bruised face destroyed that illusion.
He brought her to his house, called a doctor and asked only one question.
“How long?”
Claire answered with the truth.
“Six years.”
The confession broke something inside him. But instead of shouting, Harrison sat beside her and listened as she described the first insult, the first threat and the first time Evan apologized with flowers after hurting her. She told him how Evan gradually took control of her passwords, credit cards, company access and friendships. Every restriction had arrived disguised as protection.
When Claire mentioned the hidden computer files, Harrison immediately called Vale Medical’s general counsel.
They examined the copies Claire had saved to a flash drive.
The damage was worse than she knew.
Evan had diverted nearly eighteen million dollars through shell companies. He had backdated contracts using Claire’s electronic signature. The final voting agreement would have transferred permanent control of Vale Medical to him and protected him from removal.
But one file was missing: the encryption key linking Evan personally to the offshore accounts.
Without it, his lawyers could argue that an employee had framed him.
Claire remembered something from the night before. During their argument, Evan had repeatedly touched a loose section of wood paneling beside his office bookshelf.
Harrison sent a private security specialist to the house while Evan was at the gym. Behind the panel, they found a second flash drive, forged passports and a handwritten list of account passwords.
They also found a document titled “Claire Contingency.”
It contained photographs of prescription bottles she had never used, fabricated psychiatric reports and instructions for having her declared legally incompetent.
Harrison stared at the pages in silence.
“He planned to take the company and make everyone believe I was unstable,” Claire said.
“He planned more than that,” the general counsel replied.
The final page contained an accidental-death insurance policy worth twenty-five million dollars.
Evan was the sole beneficiary.
Harrison wanted the police to arrest him immediately, but investigators needed Evan to confirm possession of the hidden files and demonstrate that Claire had been coerced.
So Claire called her husband.
She told him she was frightened and considering coming home.
Evan answered instantly.

He did not know detectives were already waiting outside his house.
