Chapter 4 - THE ACCOUNT IN HER MOTHER’S NAME

Adrian remained on the floor as Isabella revealed the final document.
It was an offshore account statement carrying the name of her mother, Catherine Vale.
Catherine had died when Isabella was sixteen.
Her estate had been settled years before Adrian entered the family.
Yet the account had received forty-two million dollars from Mercer Global.
Adrian stared at the name.
“I never opened that account.”
“Vanessa says you did.”
“She is lying.”
“The bank used a passport copy stored in my father’s archive. Only three people had access.”
“Your father had dozens of employees.”
“The access log shows your credentials.”
Adrian rose too quickly, desperation replacing grief.
“I did not use Catherine’s identity.”
“Then tell me who did.”
He turned away.
That reaction gave Isabella the answer before he spoke.
“Your mother,” she said.
Adrian closed his eyes.
His mother, Eleanor Mercer, had presented herself as a refined philanthropist who considered Isabella unworthy of her son. She had accompanied Adrian to the hospital, placed the paternity waiver in Isabella’s hand and watched security escort her out.
Eleanor had also served as chairwoman of one of the shell companies.
“She said the account was temporary,” Adrian whispered. “She arranged the documents.”
“And you transferred money into it.”
“I did what she told me was necessary to protect the merger.”
“You let her steal my dead mother’s identity.”
“I didn’t know whose name she used until later.”
“But you continued.”
Adrian said nothing.
A chime sounded from the elevator.
Two company attorneys entered, followed by a federal financial investigator.
Adrian stepped backward.
Isabella had not expected federal agents that evening, but Vanessa’s evidence had moved faster than anyone predicted.
The investigator instructed Adrian not to leave the penthouse.
One attorney collected the black folder.
The other delivered the board’s formal decision.
Adrian had been removed as chief executive. Every corporate benefit, property allowance and security privilege was suspended. The penthouse belonged to an entity controlled by Isabella’s trust.
He had twenty-four hours to surrender possession.
The company he claimed she could not manage had removed him before midnight.
His mother’s accounts had also been frozen.
Adrian looked at Isabella.
“You planned all of this.”
“No. You did.”
He turned toward the investigator. “I will cooperate.”
“You may contact counsel.”
“I can identify everyone involved.”
Isabella understood immediately.
He intended to trade his mother’s freedom for his own.
Eleanor had taught Adrian to view loyalty as a transaction. Now that his empire was collapsing, he was prepared to abandon her as quickly as he had abandoned Isabella and Jonathan.
The investigator escorted him toward the study.
Before disappearing through the doorway, Adrian looked back at the baby.
“Will you let me see him?”
Isabella’s answer was measured.
“A court will decide what is safe for him.”
“I am his father.”
“You treated fatherhood like a legal inconvenience until it threatened your company.”
His shoulders dropped.
For the first time, he had no argument.
No threat.
