Chapter 4 - The Gala and the Ultimate Reveal

Three months later, the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a glittering monument to excess. Crystal chandeliers cascaded light over shimmering gowns, expensive champagne flowed like water, and the city’s elite mingled under the heavy scent of imported roses and ambition.

I stood near the mahogany bar, wearing a breathtaking, backless midnight-blue velvet gown that hugged my gently rounding five-month belly with undeniable elegance. Diamonds sparkled at my throat and ears—gifts from Julian Vance, who stood beside me with one hand resting possessively on the small of my back.

Across the ballroom, standing near the hors d'oeuvres table in a slightly rumpled tuxedo, was Ryan Miller.

He looked terrible. The confident swagger he had worn when he kicked me out three months ago was gone, replaced by haunted dark circles under his eyes and a frantic, desperate edge to his movements. Ever since the Vance Group abruptly pulled all funding, canceled his contracts, and systematically blacklisted his firm across the entire financial sector, Ryan’s life had been in a freefall. His new golden-goose mistress had been demanding expensive nursery renovations, high-end baby showers, and luxury cars, while the company’s bank accounts hemorrhaged red ink.

Worse still, whispers had begun circulating through high society about the striking physical dissimilarity between Ryan and the infant his new wife had given birth to a month prior—whispers fueled by leaked DNA lab reports that had mysteriously landed on the desks of half the city's gossip columnists.

"You're staring, darling," Julian murmured near my ear, his lips brushing my temple as he pressed a glass of sparkling cider into my hand.

"Just admiring the view of a sinking ship," I smiled, taking a delicate sip.

Just then, the ballroom doors swung open, and the master of ceremonies tapped his microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, our host and principal benefactor of tonight’s charity auction, Mr. Julian Vance, accompanied by his partner, Mrs. Madeline Miller-Vance!"

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. Heads whipped around. Flashbulbs blinded us as photographers rushed forward. Ryan Miller choked on his champagne, coughing violently as he shoved his way through the crowd, his eyes bulging out of his head as he stared up at the raised dais where Julian and I stood side by side.

Julian raised his microphone, the deep, resonant timbre of his voice silencing the entire ballroom instantly.

"Good evening," Julian began smoothly, his slate-grey eyes scanning the crowd before locking dead onto Ryan’s pale, sweat-soaked face. "Before we begin the auction, I have a special announcement to make regarding the future of the Vance Group’s philanthropic division—and my own personal life."

He turned, pulling me closer against his side, his hand resting warmly over my swollen belly.

"Tonight, I am proud to announce that Madeline and I are expecting our first child together. An heir who will inherit not just a legacy, but a clean, honest foundation built on mutual respect and absolute truth."

Ryan pushed his way to the front of the crowd, his face twisting in a grotesque mask of shock, fury, and sheer disbelief. He pointed a shaking finger toward the stage.

"Madeline?!" Ryan shrieked, his voice cracking over the microphone feedback. "What the hell is going on? That’s—that’s my wife! You’re sleeping with my wife?!"

The ballroom instantly descended into dead silence. Every eye darted between Ryan’s unhinged hysteria and Julian’s icy, unbothered smirk.

Julian didn't flinch. He simply signaled to the AV technicians behind the sound booth.

"Actually, Ryan," Julian’s voice echoed calmly across the speakers, "she hasn't been your wife for nearly three months. Furthermore, according to paternity tests conducted last week—copies of which are currently being distributed to your creditors and your new wife—the child you are currently raising bears zero genetic relation to you. In fact, science confirms you have been sterile for over a decade. A little medical secret you kept from Madeline while blaming her for your own failures."

Murmurs erupted into a deafening roar of scandal. Reporters frantically typed on their phones. Photographers shoved lenses into Ryan’s horrified, weeping face.

Ryan staggered backward, clutching his head, realizing in one devastating, public catastrophe that his entire life—his career, his marriage, his family, and his fake legacy—had been completely, irrevocably dismantled.

He looked up at the stage, his eyes locking onto mine, filled with pathetic, agonizing plea.

"Madeline..." he choked out, taking a step forward. "Please... please, tell me it’s not true. We had eleven years—"

I stepped to the front of the stage, looking down at the man who had discarded me like trash on a rainy morning. I placed a protective hand over my belly, feeling a strong, healthy kick from the baby within—a child who would know love, truth, and absolute security.

"Eleven years, Ryan," I said clearly into the microphone, my voice ringing with crystal-clear triumph. "And you never realized you were standing in the dark. Enjoy the fall."
