Chapter 3 - The Audit of a Fraud

By 5:00 PM that afternoon, Ethan had managed to flag down a cab and return to our suburban townhome. He was expecting a quiet house, a frightened wife waiting to apologize, and dinner warming on the stove.

Instead, he found the front door unlocked, two movers carrying our master bedroom mattress down the stairs, and a strange man sitting at our dining room table surrounded by thick stacks of financial binders.

Ethan burst through the door, his face twisted in fury. "What is going on here? Who gave you permission to enter my house?!"

The man at the table—a forensic accountant named Harold Finch, hired by my father’s legal team—didn't even look up from his ledger. He simply adjusted his glasses and flipped a page.

"Mr. Morgan, I presume," Harold said dryly. "Please close the door. We have a lot of ground to cover, and frankly, your administrative disorganization is appalling."

"Get out of my house right now, or I'm calling the police!" Ethan yelled, marching toward the table.

Harold sighed, finally raising his eyes. He tapped a certified document sitting right in the center of the mahogany wood. "You are welcome to call the police, Mr. Morgan. However, I should warn you that doing so might accelerate your prosecution for bank fraud, identity theft, and corporate embezzlement."

Ethan stopped dead in his tracks. The color drained from his face so fast it looked like someone had pulled a plug in his veins.

"W-what are you talking about?" Ethan stammered, his bravado instantly evaporating.

"Let's review, shall we?" Harold began, ticking items off with a silver pen. "Three months ago, while your wife was six months pregnant, you took out a forty-thousand-dollar business loan using her social security number and forged digital signatures on a secondary line of credit tied to her grandmother’s inheritance trust. You claimed it was for 'expansion capital' for your graphic design firm."

Ethan swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing violently. "That was... that was a temporary arrangement. I was going to pay it back—"

"You didn't pay it back," Harold corrected coldly. "Instead, you funneled twenty-two thousand dollars of those funds into a joint account shared with an executive assistant at your firm named Chloe Henderson. Shall I pull up the hotel receipts from your 'business trips' to Milwaukee last winter?"

The silence in the living room became absolute. The movers paused on the stairs, watching the drama unfold with wide eyes. Ethan looked like a man standing on the edge of a crumbling cliff, staring down into an abyss of his own making.

"How... how do you know all this?" Ethan whispered, his voice trembling.

"Because General Thomas Morgan does not do things by halves," Harold said with a faint, grim smile. "When your wife called her father today, he didn't just send a car. He ordered a complete forensic audit of every single household asset, corporate filing, and digital footprint connected to your name. And guess what, Mr. Morgan? You are entirely insolvent. Your business is operating at a net negative, your personal credit is destroyed by hidden gambling debts, and every single asset you thought you controlled is currently subject to immediate seizure to cover the fraudulent loans you took out behind your wife's back."

Ethan dropped onto the edge of the living room sofa, burying his face in his hands as reality finally crashed down upon him. The arrogant, untouchable golden boy of the family was completely naked, exposed as a fraud, a thief, and a coward.

"Where is Claire?" Ethan mumbled into his palms. "I need to talk to her. She... she loves me. She’ll fix this."

Harold packed his documents neatly back into his leather briefcase, locked the brass clasps with a sharp click, and stood up.

"Mrs. Morgan is currently recovering safely with her family," Harold said, walking past Ethan toward the front door. "And as for fixing this, Mr. Morgan? Not even a miracle worker can fix a shattered contract. My advice to you is to start packing whatever fits in a garbage bag, because the foreclosure notices and bankruptcy filings will be arriving on this doorstep by 9:00 AM tomorrow."
