Back at his office, the adrenaline finally crashed, leaving a hollow, echoing exhaustion in its wake. Mercer Ridge was funded, the emergency debt was secured without a predatory equity trap, and payroll for the next six months was completely safe. Yet, Ethan couldn't shake the image of gray eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses, the sharp smell of lemon cleaner, and the name whispered in the shadows: Victor Halden. Victor Halden wanted them out of the picture. He engineered a hostile takeover, manufactured a fake zoning violation, and systematically squeezed her husband—who happened to be the founder and lead structural engineer—until the company collapsed under fabricated legal debts.” Ethan leaned forward, feeling the cold weight of the story settle over him. “What happened to her husband?” “Died of a massive heart attack three months after losing the company,” Miller said quietly. “Stress, financial ruin, and betrayal. Claire lost everything—her company, her husband, her future. Halden made sure she was blackballed from every high-level corporate firm in Illinois. She’s been working underground as a contracted custodial worker in high-rise corporate towers for the past three years, just to stay close enough to watch them... and wait for an opportunity to strike back.”
Ethan stood up and walked to the floor-to-ceiling office window, looking out over the glittering lights of Chicago. The pieces of the puzzle clicked violently into place. She hadn’t just saved Mercer Ridge because it was the right thing to do; she had used his company as a battering ram to strike a blow against the man who had destroyed her life.
